how many 480's are left?

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

That is the DVLA data, it was a mahoosive spreadsheet, but some guy on the pistonheads website took it and put frontend on it and set up that website.

It is the number of Taxed vehicles, not the number still in existance - hence why the numbers go up and down across the years on the spreadsheet.

What's a 480 GLT and what does S/R as in 480 ES S/R stand for?

GLT doesn't exist
SR normally stand for Safety Restraints

What's a Safety Restraint?
Is that seatbelts?
I thought they all have seatbelts, I always assumed the S/R indicated a sunroof.

I think you're right. In the VIN there is a digit for the type of safety restraints a 480 is equipped with but here it makes no sense.

Sunroof seems more plausible, even though the electric one was called a moonroof instead ;)

Why are the sunroof models listed separately? It's just an option. Why not list a/c models separately?

I think he mixed up S/R with SRS (Supplemental Restraint System -airbags).

Got the following email from the DVLA. Now off to search the web for the
meaning. Being a Volvo 740 estate automatic, I doubt the S stands for sports
!! LOL

Thank you for your e-mail.

The Volvo company manufactures many different variants of the Volvo 740. Two
of these variants are the "Volvo 740 GL" and the "Volvo 740 GL S/R".

A Volvo dealer would be able to describe the difference between the two
variants, and exactly which one your vehicle is. Alternatively, many car
books and magazines would contain this information.

The "SR" is not generated by DVLA, and certainly does not mean
"Stolen/Recovered".

I hope this is helpful.

Regards

Apparently Volvo came up with the S/R definition.

And here we learn what ASR stands for, I say: mystery solved 8)

Because volvo class it as a body style. Like number of doors, Estate, or Saloon.
Its definitely sunroof, when you choose a vehicle in VADIS it gets you to choose bodystyle -either _x_door S/R or _x_door W/O S/R.

The manual sunroof is an aftermarket option - these will not be listed as an S/R.

I'd get you a screenshot but Vadis tends to hang a lot on Win 7 for some reason....

An interesting albeit very old thread.

I suspect that the numbers plummeted from 2010 onwards but have levelled out in recent years.

Does anyone have any stats from the various governmental vehicle licensing organisations from around Europe?

I had a look on the How many left website a few months ago for UK numbers.
In the UK There were:
153 turbos left
803 x 480's in total (including turbos)
I know a few have been scrapoed/parted out since then.

Thanks Roy - useful information. I think there's possibly more than we think. I know a lot of non 480 owners were very surprised to see 7 480s at the Festival of the Unexceptional on Saturday. It's reassuring. And the interest with young drivers is especially reassuring.

HML a total red herring if you include SORN numbers.

SORN numbers would include 10+ years of scrappers!

Look at how many taxed instead as a rough guide.

(UK Turbos = 24 taxed as of 2024 DVLA data)

Jeff's Turbo Database casts a bleak outlook.

I think there is a Dutch equivalent to HML but not sure what it's called.

I have compiled a rare editions register - Paris, two tone, GT and Celebration. All based on posts on the forum, in the guest book or on Faceache together with all photos of 480s on the Internet. I can't begin the tell you how how many I have sqinted at over the last 5 years trying to make out barely visible registrations then checking to find out which model they are/were (every Paris Blue one in case the bumper stripe isn't as black as it looks, every burgundy or green one in case the Vesa wheels have been changed and every burgundy, white or black/grey one that might or might not be a Celeb.) Shots of the rear aren't conclusive, there have been some that have turned out to have a donated hatch with the wrong badge. Then of course there were the S or ES models incorrectly registered as GTs such as the one Edie used to have, plus another one I've identified. This explains why HML shows the number registered being more than the 250 built.

Bearing in mind people like us who only tax our 480s for part of the year, my records are based on how many have a current mot. Also very bleak reading, but there will be others driving around out there that that I haven't found.

I can be almost certain there are no more Paris editions to be found. HML shows 2 taxed and one on sorn. I had to look at year of registration to arrive at these figures because the 1.7 two tones got the same model description and were often registered as blue, so there is the faint possibility of late registrations muddled in with the two tones still existing. Having said that, every one I've found was registered in 1991, either on an H or J plate. I now have details of 2 with current mots and one in store so I'm not hopeful.
