Cant decide what to go for. ES or Turbo
Hi, iv decided to go for a 480 and there are two on ebay at the moment that i like one is a low miles ES (68k), the other is a slightly higher turbo (86K) but i cant decide which to go for. The ES looks better and is closer to me but the power and potential of the turbo makes me not want the slower ES. i cant decide what to do. Any thoughts, thanks
Mike.

Re: Cant decide what to go for. ES or Turbo
I wouldn't buy the '93 2.0i model with the red oildipstick engine. They can use oil like a oilboat. The '94 on model 2.0i engines are modified by Volvo to prevent this oil use. You can regognize the later by the green oildipstick.
And regarding power, the 2.0i and turbo in standard form are almost the same, not really a noticable difference in speed sensation. But offcourse the turbo is a lot easier and cheaper to tune than the n/a engines, but the 2.0i is certainly not a slow car. I would go for a 2.0i if you're not planning on tuning the turbo. The 2.0i are a lot easier to work on and are cheaper to maintain, but remember to go for the greendipstick!

Not really much info. on the ES & they haven't even bothered to replace the o/s day running bulb. At least on the turbo, she's shown a few details. I'd go for that, if you can get it for the starting price. Apart from that, I agree 100% with the points Iroll480 made.

The turbo looks nice as is, but you can always give the es a bit of love&get it there. Personally I'dd be keen on the turbo if it wasnt an auto
Although I have not driven a turbo, I can vounch for the later 2.0i 's performance. I enjoy only using 5th gear half of the day

Thanks for the replys, i cant belive i did not notice the turbo was an auto - damn. I think i will wait for the right turbo because i will probably want to richmod it.#
BUT that ES is close to me and only 595 with very low milage im so indecisive.

Well, since the ES is with a dealer, you should be able to knock down the price a bit. Just make sure it's got the right colour dipstick
Incidentally, mine's a Turbo auto, admittedly with a richmod, so about 175 BHP, & it's a great drive. I use the box manually most of the time.

Re: Cant decide what to go for. ES or Turbo
On the old red/green dipstick issues, I *thought* that volvo realised the use of oil on the old red ones and performed upgrades, to prevent oil use, during annual services? This of course would only treat cars with ful volvo service history for the first few years?

Re: Cant decide what to go for. ES or Turbo
i think they may have only removed the oil jets which cool the bottom of t6he pistons.
Re: Cant decide what to go for. ES or Turbo
Regarding the mods the dealer made I seem to remember that they also replaced the oilscrape ring for an upgraded one.
This is something I''ve copied from a topic on this board a couple of years ago and saved it:
Changes on B20F 208/209 '94 on(green dipstick) versus 116/118 old B20F (red dipstick '92-'93)
208&116 stands for the manual and 209&118 for the automatic (ZF4 box)
These adaptations were done by Volvo to reduce excessive oil use. Some red dipstick engines are
modified by Volvo under warrenty,so there are some non oil using 116/118 engines around.
New:
Pistons and rings
Camshaft
Crankshaft and Main bearings
Connecting rods
No piston cooling anymore
Inlet manifold
Throttle body with adjusting screw for base settings is left
Oilcapacity 5.7L with filter, 2.2L between max and min, (old version had 5,4ltr)
Green dipstick: 80kw@5200rpm 165nm@3500rpm comp.ratio 9,8:1
Red dipstick: 81kw@5500rpm 165nm@3500rpm comp.ratio 9,5:1

Re: Cant decide what to go for. ES or Turbo
I recently bought a 480 turbo auto, somewhat expensive but in great condition. Since adding a Richmod
it flies like the proverbial S*** of a shovel...

Re: Cant decide what to go for. ES or Turbo
My issues with getting an auto are simply -
I had an auto for a year and it was good and fun to drive but as soon as i got back into a manual car i loved it, it felt so more involved (which it is) and having total control of the gears was more fun too.
Also auto drink more fuel and are heavier not good things for a daily driver.

Re: Cant decide what to go for. ES or Turbo
ive got a 440 turbo auto, and i can happily say it isnt a major fuel guzzler. the manuals on a motorway can do 45mpg (avg) on the motorway ive got 43mpg(avg) but if you cane the arse out of it (easily done if you have a richmod fitted) the economy goes out the window! HAve managed to get as low as 11mpg.
Another point i found with the auto is you dont lose boost when the gears change! foot to the floor they can shift - (it's the only auto ive driven that easily wheelspins if im a bit too leadfooted).
But the choice is yours! Just make sure the rear arches are in good nick, if there rusty there on there last legs!
