Help!! Heating stuck on...it's boiling!!!!

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Help!! Heating stuck on...it's boiling!!!!

Post by Rachel » Sat Aug 28, 2010 5:36 pm

Hello.

ok, well I have noticed white bits come out of the vents....kind of looks like limescale, but it's not....cause I tasted it...as you do  Anyway, not sure its related just thought I'd say cause there is loads of it...like snow in my car. Driving home today I turned the heating up full for a sec, cause the windscreen was well misted up, and now it won't turn down  I've had a little check and the heater nob is attached at the back which I thought might have come free.

What can I do?? I can't drive around like this....it's actually really really hot...like too hot, even for full heat mode

Please help!

Thanks.

You haven't accidently hit the AC MAX button? I did this before and thought the heater had broken because no matter what position the switch was at it was on full blast,

Do you feel resistance if you operate the heaterslide? If not one side of the cable must have came loose or the end on top of the vem or the other end at the heaterflap. Otherwise the flap itself is broken above the heater core. Maybe that will explain the white debris, could be some kind of insulation?

Thanks so much for your reply....it's much appreciated.

I had another look behind the dash....didn't do much, but after a good run she seems ok. Very odd though..... cauiously I haven't turned up the heating, as last time I did the problem happened.... so fingers crossed it won't happen again. :D

Still not sure about the snow I get from the vents though....that can't be a good thing :?

Just had a look on the web and the White dust could be from a knackered evaporator on your aircon system .Also it may not be good for your health .If I were you I would get some advice. By the way I know nothing about this

Oh blimey....thank you Kev. The white stuff seems to come out only when the heating is no though...and it also, oddly, smells of curry sometimes too :? . It all needs looking at I think tbh.....I really need the heating to be tip top before the cold weather sets in...there is no way on earth I'm gonna suffer the winter with no decent/safe heating.

The heater also seems to steam up the windscreen???? Fortunatly I do have control of the temperature now though....it was fine the next day, but I haven't dared turn it up to max just in case.

Thanks for you advise Kev :D

Ok....I had another go today. Turning the heating to max and upped the fan....turned it down and it still keeps on kicking out the heat for ages....even after parking up for a bit, with the heating turned to cold, if I turned the fan up heat would pile out.

This can't be right can it? The heating in my turbo was great....as soon as you turned it down you could feel a difference in temp. I'm also concerned about the amount of condensation I get from the heating also...again this can't be right??

Dust was much less though, so that's a bonus :D

If anyone can shed any light on this I'd love to hear from you. Maybe the system is different cause of the air con?? I just have to get this sorted before the cold weather hits.... at least I'll know I'll be warm (hot) but I really do think summit is up, and
if I can't trun it down it will be like driving in a sauna!!

Thanks for reading :D

I have the celeb with air con, never use it though, I either have the windscreen button depressed or the floor button depressed (buttons to the right) and the fan switch always has to be at position 1 (0 to5) or it wont demist the windscreen.

hope this is helpful Rachel

Cheers Jools, but I don't think it's a problem with the air con at all....that works great.... Its the heating which mists up the windscreen and doesn't seem to want to turn down :?
