Standard 1.7 Drivability
Apologies for the poor English in the title but I was trying to avoid being long-winded.
What's the drive like on a standard 1.7? As you've probably seen from my wanted post I'm after an automatic and wondered if the 1.7 in auto guise is worthwhile or not.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts & comments

Re: Standard 1.7 Drivability
The 1.7 handles exactly as the same as all other 480 's you may have to use the gears a bit more because the power is a bit less but the smile factor is just the same. If you get the chance of a good 480 regardless of models jump at it . I had a neglected little 1.7 and mean neglected but not I hasten to add by me , and it was a little honey to drive. 1.7 no hesitation

Re: Standard 1.7 Drivability
i can happily say the turbo auto is good fun! i have a 440 turbo auto and it's a great motor (when the engine isnt trowing it's dummy out the pram!). The auto box seems to be a bit of a rarity but there are a few around. but i would stick with your choice of a 480, the 440/460 dont handle quite as well.
Toys:-
2001 Ford focus (not as much fun as my volvo was!)

why not try a manual she only has 49000 on the clock!
Re: Standard 1.7 Drivability
Because I have a knackered knee and a trip to work that includes 20 roundabouts each way and sometimes heavy traffic toojoe480reed wrote:why not try a manual she only has 49000 on the clock!

Re: Standard 1.7 Drivability
I used to have a 1.7, not quite as quick as the 2.0 but really pokey and drove like a dream. I'd get another one if the missis would let me. she says 2 is enough lol

We currently have my pug dt as the daily driver (stiff clutch) and 2 Celica GT four's but I'm looking to sell both of my cars and getting a 480 (always liked them) if I need 4wd turbo fun then I'll just borrow (steal ) the mrs' car Just has to be an auto because of my knee thoughLoki wrote:I used to have a 1.7, not quite as quick as the 2.0 but really pokey and drove like a dream. Re: Standard 1.7 Drivability
Well, my ES is a little bit slower than a Turbo which I drove to compare. But the difference isn't striking
Turbo have nice kick when the turbine comes into play

Re: Standard 1.7 Drivability
The 480 turbo-automatic is very rare.. I very cool choice.. The boost of the turbo is a little bit higher because of the gearbox.
Don`t know if you feel it but i think it will go faster than a manual one. just step on it and Goooo!

Re: Standard 1.7 Drivability
I estimate a 2l auto will accelerate about the same as a manual 1.7. But the auto performance is available when pressing down the accelerator, the manual you have to work the gears. So in day to day driving an auto is quicker. A turbo-auto will be as quick as a 2l manual I assume. But quite a lot less economical. A 1.7 auto would be to lethargic for my taste.

Re: Standard 1.7 Drivability
Since an automatic will shift around 2-3000 rpm when driving normally. I would choose a 2 liter automatic since they have around 15% more torque in that area then a 1.7. So it will be a smoother an quicker ride.
