480's in Ireland...FAO Irish Members

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

480's in Ireland...FAO Irish Members

Post by pat480 » Fri Sep 18, 2009 7:46 pm

Mo69s thread got me thinking how many 480's are left in Southern Ireland. So I started a bit of a register
I would hazzard a guess of about 40 road going examples, but i could be completely wrong

The ones I know of are

93-D-328** Grey (my own)
95-G-80** White (David old 2.0)
91 C 165** Grey (Davids old ES)
92 RN 19** Light Green Metalic for sale on carzone at the moment
94 C ? Dark Green Gt that was for sale about two years ago in Cork
88 TN ? White ES I saw near Portlaoise last year
95 D ? White over priced one that was on carzone about a month ago
Apparently there is a White one around Dungarvan
And one around Carlow if i recollect from the spotted section

So Thats nine

Laid up ones I know of are

87 CE 17**.....My own Grey parts car i refuse to kill.
89 KE ? The mangled Red car in Mo69's Photos
89 D 231** A Parts car on Carzone at the moment
87 ? An ES that was rotting in a field outside clonmel
89,90,91 for sale in Limerick on Donedeal.ie at the moment

So thats seven...

So any of the other Irish Members know of other ones to add to the list ?

Moslo (Marty) on the forum here has a 1994 ES as far as I can recall.

MO69 has a 1994 S and a 1990 S also, I'm sure they will both confirm at some stage! Apparently there is a guy in Gorey with another two.

There's a guy from Dublin, can remember his name (never on here but has a site www.volvo400.com) with a black ES.

So that's four more (plus two in Gorey) to add to the list. Apologies I havent a notion regarding regisration...

Thanks for that David

That brings the rolling total to fifeteen (thats if MO69 and the guy from Gorey have both cars on the Road)

Mabye the guestimate of 40 is too high...after all meeting another 480 on the road is a rare sight indeed

There is a member statistics page on the main site

http://www.volvo-480-europe.org/clubdat ... rstats.php

That puts 31 cars registered from Ireland, that figure could be out of date though if the club has been set up since 2000

I remember a mention (probably on another volvo site) of Explorer and Author..Tim Severin of owning a 480 down in West Cork

Perhaps this was your old '91 ES David ? That came from that part of the country if i remember correctly

I know of another in Arklow which is a 2.0 gt. There is a posibility that there is are 2 turbos in the east Wicklow area . But thease have not been comfirmed but i am trying to find them. When i find them i will post them. PS does any body out there kwow where 90 W 480 has gone, last seen in the wicklow area about 10 years ago.

Hi Avaconirl..Great to see another Irish member on here

The Gt in Arklow could be the one mentioned... if it Dark Green and on a cork plate.
90 W 480..what a great reg,is (was) white and was last taxed in 2002... according to mywheels.ie so its either parked up somewhere or more likely its in the great volvo car park in the sky

My '91 ES came from a guy called Richard Knight in Ballydehob...which is west Cork.

That GT in Wicklow brings it up to sixteen.

Richard Knight...What a great name, how could that man not be successful in life, bet he got all the girls

There is a chance that could have been Tom Severins former car but nothing concrete.

There was a 480 for sale on buyandsell earlier in the year in Wexford, had two year NCT and was a 1000 euro..Know anything about that avaconirl?

There was also a Red 1987 ES for sale in Dublin on the Buyandsell last year
also for a 1000 euro..could be the oldest 480 on the road here..Anyone know anything about it?

yeah you can add me to the list -
94 KK Steel Grey ES, Kilkenny / Carlow area.

Haven't seen another 480 on irish roads for a long time. Saw a two-tone around Carlow a few times but that was a good while ago, think it was a galway reg.

I remember also there was a 95D95 for sale a while ago, cant remember which website but looked pretty nice if i recall, anyone know anything bout it?

95-D-95 shows up as a Green 2.0 litre 480 alright, not taxed in about six months though..

Iv already counted the two tone and David mentioned yours.

This brings the total to seventeen

Could be another one to add to the list, this is on BuyandSell at the moment, it says 440 but its obviously a 480...Bit on the pricey side as well.
Anyone know anything about it?

Never seen nor heard of this one before and I lived in Carlow for four years...it's a small place. Probably bought in the UK for pittance and imported...now trying to sell it for astronomical profit.

God I miss my 480 :(

For a production car that sold over 80,000 over an 8 year period 17 is an incredibly low number of vehicles!
I distingtly remember my dad test-driving one at the Volvo dealership in Kerry when they first came out so they were for sale generally in Ireland...but they were also v expensive from what I can gather.

17 is only what's mentioned here so far. Unfortunately the DOT dont give out figures like the DVLA, the actual number could be anything between 25-50 id imagine

The cars are now between 14-22 years old...in general the Irish car buying public are number plate snobs,a lot have been scrapped already and as you said, the car was expensive new..... 16.000 sterling in the UK so i dread what it was here when they had import duties added on

In a way the low numbers are a good thing, the 480 is a rare sight in Ireland, i had one guy ask me if it had a 4.8 litre engine

Yeah I've had a question like that directed at me too! Incredible some of the remarks actually...the funniest was probably when I was driving though Wexford last year in my 1991 ES. I group of kids were gawking at the car and with the window open I heard one of em saying as I drove past 'it's not a Ferarri it's a Volvo!'

Did you post un on the Volvo club form too?

i've been working in carlow for over 3 years and i haven't seen this one around either. Maybe it's been garaged? David's theory more likely tho! I wonder what makes a car 10% more original than when it left the factory?
