Welding door hinges

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Welding door hinges

Post by Van » Sat Mar 07, 2009 2:47 pm

Ever since a particular person drove my car the drivers door has been sagging and I couldn't get it adjusted properly. The workshop discovered a crack where the hinge is welded on the A-pillar. They want to weld it and preferably on the inside to. Anyone know what's inside the A-pillar and how the hinges originally were welded? Any burning material behind them?

I guess the crack had already developed and would have appeared anytime, but I'm left with a bad feeling...has the person been hanging on the door or so... :(

they are welded from the outside.

If someone hold the door (can use a jack) then its possible to weld the outside.

i removed the door and hammered them in position, so the doors closed propperly, only after than i welded them. i used a lot of force at hammering.

doors

While there's a thread about doors I'd like to know if anyone else has had welding done inside the door skin to hold the door stay in position. Is this an area that generally needs work? I had the door off recently to lift it ( I managed with a couple of split washers placed on the hinges.) and I noticed a weld that did'nt look "factory"

If this is an area of weakness that might to lead the door stay pulling through I might have to remove it and get it done again soon.

The workshop did a good job. They also had to weld the door-side of the top hinges. The door does need to be closed firm, but sits tight.

Hi,

I welded my door hinge this week. if you take the door off you have to remove the panel from the footwell to undo the wiring and help it through the hole. One of the holes the wiring goes through is directly behind the hinge so you can get to it to weld. I only welded the outside and adjusted the hinge with washes to make it line up. I only needed to do the bottom hinge as the top seemed ok. It now shuts like new. Seems strange because i have lived with the door slowly dropping for months.
