The BIG freeze

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

We had -20 here in middle of Sweden on Monday morning.
The old 480-tic had no problems with that :!:

Currently it is about +5C

Do you guys in Finland, Sweden and Estonia use an engine pre-heater or is it a cold boot?

I saw -6.5 in the Octavia on thursday, Amy saw -8 in the 440. Both started instantly (well I would hope a 10 week, 7,000 mile car would do!) although we are having problems with frozen washer jets.

Our water pipes in the loft keep freezing, leaving us with no hot water etc, at the moment we've got two electric heaters up there which is just keeping it flowing, think our electric bill for this quarter is going to be fookin huge!
Just ordered a solid fuel rayburn, but I'm not going to have that fitted for a couple months I expect, just so long as its all done before baby arrives in May...

Mostly yes - If I have to opportunity to use it. But if I don't have the opportunity, I'll still start the car anyway. It's not that the car wouldn't start without it - its just more gentle for the engine. They say one cold start wears the engine as much as driving 500km with a warm engine. And cold engine uses a lot more fuel than warm, ofcourse.

The colder the thicker the oil is. It takes a while for the oil to get pumped to all parts of the engine and warm up thus becoming more fluid. That's why cold starts cause more wear.

17th century farmhouse, reed, lathe and plaster ceiling, no insulation, and no felt under the tiles either...
We need to get the waterproof insulation that can go under the rafters under the tiles rather than on top the joists in the ceiling, otherwise it would make the pipes freeze more (by keeping heat out of the loft, In fact I have heard there have been more cases recently of peoples pipes freezing due to them increasing the insulation on the ceiling, keeps the house a lot warmer but loft colder! ), but thats gonna cost about £800 for a 30m long roof, and then I wouldn't be able to afford the rayburn/radiators/piping etc, so we'd still be cold... hopefully once we've got the rayburn going the chimney being in use and having the central heating header up there should keep the frost off, it does at my parents end of the house, then we can save for insulation, if we aren't left destitiute before then!

I had it in my previous car, but I never bothered installing one in my actual. I drive it 40 km to work ever day, so it gets really warmed up on the trip.
I always use the best oil though. Every time i change the filter and oil, I give my comrade 4.5 litres pure synthetic 5W-40 oil.
I think it only deserves the best :!:
