Tow Bar...and Trailer...

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

i recomend one of these:
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... n-products

an assistant, and a set of these:
http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/produ ... -twin-pack

cheapest way i found of towing a dead 480.

just make sure and have a spare battery if you need lights at night!

edit: you could also run into difficulty (not least with the police) if your towing more than the weight of your car, im not aware of the exact rules, but i can guess that weight of trailer+weight of dead 480 = more than weight of towing 480...

Yeah, i would prob use a larger car anyway, as i would only be a hypocrite-the amount of times i have sat there slagging off fiesta drivers for towing caravans! Maybe i could persuade work to let me have a Landy lol!!

cheers for the link!!

Best thing to tow a 480 is another bigger Volvo !!

Whats the smallest legal device for towing a car which is not occupied?
Are A frames illegal now ?
Also check out your yellow pages for car trailer rental, think its around £40-60 for the day.

you will need something bigger than an volvo 850 to tow a 480 on a trailer. You can just get away with an XC90/S80.

To stay legal when towing a car trailer loaded you must first of all have a B+E licence and then a trailer which is rated with a payload of 1.5ton. Then add the weight of the trailer this would be around 300kgs so the gross weight would be 1.8ton which is the max an XC90/S80 can legally tow. An 850/V70 is even less than that. If you towing without a B+E licence and get stopped you will be done for driving otherwise in accordance of licence. this is a £60 fine and 3 points on your licence. Then if you are overweight this is fineableand is normally around £1000-2000.

Of course anyone worth their weight knows of a way round these laws.

Lol will indeed!

The website kinda confused me, i was trying to work out if i was legal, cos it said summit about a combined weight of 3500kg if you just had a plain old B-which i do...

So i think i must be wrong, dammit!! :cryhard:

Thats strange. I wanted to bring a 480 spares car back from Kent a few years ago so called the DVLA and asked if I could tow on my license, I gave my license number over and they told me I could tow with a combined weight with the vehicle I am driving of 3.5 tons. So I used my dad's 850 and an a-frame, I also had a light board strapped to the back of the 480. Loads of police cars went past as I was only doing 55 mph all the way back and none of them took any notice.

like i said any driver worth their weight.

Also you used a A-frame which weighs about 40kgs not putting the 850 overweight

Also bear in mind that the weight factor when using a trailer doesn't go on actual physical weight but on the plated weight

Yes, i was going on about this in another thread, and to my friend. Plated weight of car + plated weight of trailor must be less than 3500kg.

Friend wanted to tow an rx7 with a shogun...plated weight of shogun = 2700kg, plated weight of trailer = 2500kg.

no chance without a +E

the reason i know about the plated weights is that i was refused by a trailer company a car trailer when i said i was towing it with a 850 as it didn't have the legal tow capacity. Also at the time i didn't have a B+E licence so would be allowed anything over 750 kgs

I have all the licences and tools now.

is there not also some towing qualification which used to be standard on your licence (i.e. my dad has it as he passed his test yonks ago) but where i having passed in the last ~5 years no longer automatically get the towing part on my licence and have to sit another test?

I got my Turbo home without any problems….. my friend drove my pug deisel towing me about 80 miles by tow rope! Its not illegal as long as your ‘towing off the motorway’ …..i think!! Plus insurance was a slight issue, but that’s another problem. ;)
My friend is a slight nutter, he got the speed up to 86mph while I was going crazy at him from the 480!

No, the B+E is car plus trailer, which you got automatically. I think you probably got D1 automatically too, but now all you get is B,B1 and f, k, and p.

Bit shit really.
