Do you have a name for your 480?

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Do you have a name for your 480?

Post by Jimmy » Thu Feb 28, 2008 2:49 pm

I was wondering if any other members called their cars by name and how their names came about?

I have only ever named one car, my 1997 S40 2.0TSE was called Trevor - it just sort of fit.

Not yet named the 480 - I haven't even decided if it is male or female yet.

Sure, my 480 was quickly christened Baby. Not from any Dirty Dancing reference, but because everytime I breaked too suddenly or crunched the gears I'd apologise to her saying "Sorry baby!". The name stuck!

Having said that, when it looked like Baby was destined for scrapyard heaven lately, I went to see a turbo that I decided was called "Bark" cause of the holey exhaust. Another ES I saw ended up being called "Burp"...for no apparent reason.

I think if I have another 480 it has to start with a B. Its tradition!

All my cars have had names (and i name most of my mates too :lol: )

My 480s names...

My ES was called Lulu, cos thats practically what the letters in her reg spelt, she was a girl cos (a) she was bright red, mixed with (b) the fact that only one of her lights popped up reliably-so bright red + winkin = tart! ;) Had to be a gal!! :lol:

My GT was named Lula, as she was Lulus sister, and the name was picked by my mum, as she thought it was quaint that they were sisters - bless her :lol:

But in general a mix of number plates letters and car colours and getting to know the car.

Eg, My current run-around is called Wally, he came from Wallington

I had one car called Percy (Percival) his last 3 letters were PCV

My Rover 416i was called Junior, his last 3 letters were JRW, and he was the baby British car in the drive, so it kinda suited

My first car was a special edition Metro Tahiti, which got nicknamed Tati (take out the "hi") which my mum said kinda fitted cos it looked tatty against her cars :lol:

And after all this i can hear people telling me i REALLY need to get out more :lol:

And i have just realised that i have written all of this and i could have just said "Look at my signature" :lol:

All my cars have had names...

Escort --> 'Lilly'
Mk1 440 --> 'Gertrude' :lol:
Mk2 440 --> 'Sophie'
The 480 T --> I called it 'Ursula'. Felt kinda swedish and sounded nice. But Groomy and a few others referred to it as 'Persil', for it's whitey-ness.

You have to give it a name, as these 480's have souls.... And they're deffo. female. High maintenance, like having money spent on them etc etc ;) :wife: :lol:

Mines called ARMA, I think she had a private number plate at some point in time as the driver and passanger windows both had a different number plate and that spelled ARMA.

So ARMA it is :D
The trouble with doing something right the first time is that nobody appreciates how difficult it is.

The first 480 turbo was called "The Beast" becoz of the exhaust roar and genaral aura of the car, then it died and the new 480 Turbo had the same exhausted fitted and people still call it "The Beast" and i can't really disagree with them. Sham.
