My 440 GLT

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

My 440 GLT

Post by BruceT » Wed Nov 07, 2007 10:18 pm

Hello people

Its not new, ive had it for 3 weeks now but been busy so I have not posted much recently.

I got the car from a nice chap in wales for a some of £650!

It needed a new Heater Matrix (Which i've now replaced - pig of a job)
The entire braking system, Friction and Discs need replacing before the MOT.
I bought 4 new Nakang NS-II tyres for it as the old ones where perishing on the side walls.

Very nice car. Has a few niggles which im hoping to sort out soon ish (Handbrake light doesnt come on when the handbrake is engaged, dodgy rev counter think its a loose cable)

Overall, tidy car. Just a same to sell my C70 T5 :(

Here are some pics.

Ive heard they are nick named "Ditch Finders" by MR2 owners.

But since the Volvo is FWD ive pushed pretty hard and when the front end understeers its pretty easy to gain control again very quickly.

Not pushed it real hard in the wet though.

Hell, for £32.50 each inc balancing and new valve there damn good

Murf can tell you the answer to that.

I like the 440 and do miss my old TD. But the cost of running 2 cars was getting a little to much, and as I was never going to sell the 480 I just had to get rid of the 440, I'm pritty sure it was only used for parts by the next owner.

 Aww, that would really upset me knowing a beloved car was torn to shreds, especially if it was a really hard decision to make about selling it. The only consolation really would be to know that, perhaps, the car had been used to make another one better (like a donor :D )

Very clean indeed, looks like it's been looked after. I saw you asking about the reflective numberplate panel somewhere-it does finish the back end off nicely. I called Volvo (about 5 years ago) and they were only something like £37 inc VAT. Give them a call.

In the meantime, keep that standard up!

Im claying the car tomorrow and doing some more bodywork work.

After that, im gunna try and fix the rear bumper (Sagging) i assume I just loosen the bolts on the inside of the boot and hold the bumper up flush then tighten it up again?

Also, my passenger side fog lamp has algae on the inside of the glass.

How do I remove the fog light assembly?

My damn info centre and revs are still intermittant, May take the dash apart and check the connections on the back at the weekend if I have time.

I also though about painting the grill? I photoshopped it below., what you think?

Firstly, you gotta remember, this is a 480 forum, so the car's are different-not all will know the answers.

The fog lights have to be accessed from under the front bumper-get it up on axle stands if you have them. They're fixed by 2 x 13mm (i think, maybe 10mm) bolts onto the bumper beam. Piece of cake getting them off. But the fogs on late 440's are the same as late 480's-they're sealed, so you'll have to find a way of getting them apart then resealing them.

The bumper does have bolts through the boot, but i think there's more than two...was a long while ago now-it's not hard to get off though. It maybe sagging because it's slipped off the plastic tabs or they're broken. Here's two pics of my old 440 with the bumper off, don't know if they're any help or not:

http://www.volvogallery.org.uk/showphot ... &ppuser=89
http://www.volvogallery.org.uk/showphot ... &ppuser=89

Looks like it may just be the two bolts and the bumper slides onto the plastic tabs on the side.

The grill would look smart black-a mod i wish i'd done on mine. Here's a pic of a 440 with black grill-despite the fact i uploaded it, i don't actually like the car, but a black grill does look nice:

http://www.volvogallery.org.uk/showphot ... &ppuser=89

Might look nice with the whole thing done in black, no silver left at all.

With regards to your revs, i had a similar problem, mine also being the 2.0i. The big black pipe that comes off the inlet manifold has a little blue sensor sticking into it. Occasionally, this got dirty for some reason, so i nipped to my Uncles garage and he cleaned it out with carb cleaner. Used to do it on my 1.7i 440 too, the revs would sometimes stick at 1500+, a quick clean of that sensor cleared it up.

Hope that's some help...

Hi Dan,

Yeh, i know this if a 480 forum - but you try and find a 440 forum abilet from this and the VOC one!

Regarding the bumper, I had a look more closely and it the metal part of the bumper to which the plastic tabs click/lock into is rusted badly on the drivers side. I pulled it and the entire thing just fell off.

Ive managed to re-attach it to the panel thing on the rear side of the car.

I think im gunna have to get an entire new rear bumper section tbh.
