Here we go again

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Here we go again

Post by Agwa Moose » Sun Jun 03, 2007 7:45 pm

There I was, driving along, minding my own business and alls fine - until theres a bang, followed by a loss of power, followed by me just making it into a handy layby to have a looksee...

Nothing

Apart from a rather loud rattling sound coming from somewhere within the engine, so I take the sensible option and give up on my mission and go home

So, I'm about 20 miles away from home and driving a snail, and yes there's a trail behind me - of other cars getting a bit pissed off with this idiot in a 480 doing 40mph, nowt I can do about it, the buggers can go round me if they want, I'm not stopping em, anyway, by the time I got back I was having bother getting over 20 and for a minute didn't think it was going to make it up the hill into the village, but it did, and I finally pulled up in a cloud of smoke and a whole range of teeth jarring noises

I'll have a look tomorrow but I'm not going to hold my breath, the loss of power coupled with the awful noises coming from somewhere in the depths of the engine bay leads me to think one thing and one thing only...

Autotrader here I come

I've had a look and can't see anything obvious but the noise seems to be coming from the head, and it seems worse now, definitely a metal hitting metal sound so I'm guessing something in there's broken, without taking the bloody thing apart (again) I can't be 100% certain of anything other than I've had enough, I've had it around a year now and all I seem to have done is fix the thing, and get nowhere with it

If it didn't need anything else doing then I'd be pulling it apart and sorting it but due to the amount of other stuff it needs I've decided to call it a day, if I'm really honest about it I just can't be bothered any more, there comes a point where you have to say stop, it's already had more spent on it than it's ever going to be worth, so I'm cutting my losses now before it get's painful

I'll be removing all the stereo equipment in the next couple of days, putting the orange clusters back on and putting the momo back in the cupboard, after that the it'll probably get offered up as a parts car, I'd break it myself and sell the bits but I don't have anywhere off the road to put it while I do so...

Jesus christ!!! When will you all learn?

A 480 is to be kept unused in a garage ad polished occasionally. To try and actually drive one...thats madness.

I hope its not your last man :(

Went for a wander round the salvage yard today, dunno why, I aint got the time for owt like that

There I was, resigned myself to something boring for a while and there it is...

Bastards!

One of my most lusted after cars of all time, but one I try not to admit to...

Somehow I resisted, only just (and there was more than enough money in my pocket), Sarah fell in love at the first sight (she's only seen photo's until today - and they don't do justice) (but she loves the gen 3 as well) so she kept winding me up about it

Problem now being I want something dull, but all I can think is...

Gen 4!!!!

Must resist...

Not going back there.....

I'm calm.....

Really....

Honest...

True...

Anyway, I resisted the prelude - and in my effort to find a boring motor I went to have a look at a white automatic mondeo  (does it get any more boring than that? ) but I wasn't happy with it, it was amazingly dull but it just didn't really amuse me enough, so I didn't bother

Hmm, try an Escort then, I hate mondeo's for sheer gloom factor looking at it alone.

I've just picked up a 1.4 cvh on a K for £65, however it did need a new clutch also. Sure it's not as fast or stable as the 480, but it has a very direct feel and I've had much fun sliding about on crappy kwick-fit tyres for the last couple weeks.

Would you like to jazz it up a bit? I have 2 BRAND NEW bumpers (front and rear, naturally) for a Mundano - they are maroon, so could make your white car look well snazzy :)

Settled on an escort in the end, '96 1.6

Not too bad, full mot on it, cambelt done 8k miles ago, no knocks or squeaks (too bloody quiet), going to need the clutch done soon though thats not too big a worry

Anyway, it'll get me to work and back until I'm feeling brave (or rich) enough to risk another 480

One day...
