WHAT DOES ES Stand for???

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Yeah, the fact I have an 'S' throws away the theory that the 'E' means estate.

Hmmm, I always assumed that the S was a 'low option' version of the ES, but in Germany the S version is sometimes better equipped than the ES... It's strange and I can't explain it...
Cya,

Daniël Wilten
Volvo 480 ES Dark Green Metallic, 1996
Volvo 480 ES Graphite Grey Metallic, 1987

In the UK the S's i've generally seen have had everything the ES had except the Trip Computer.
They just had a temp guage and fuel Guage.

Although i have seen a couple of 480 S with the Trip Computer so god knows what went on with the model Variations.

GT's and celebrations all seem to have the same kit as the original ES except for Perhaps leather and Aircon as standard.

But why did they release a Bond Bug 700 ES?????????

That aint an estate Sport!!

Hi,

I remember reading somewhere that they changed ES to S or GT, because the car has had some improvements, and they didn't want to identify the new 480S and GT with the "old" problem ES car.

But that is a thickened rumour for people who don't own a 480, a marketing story if you wish.

I guess ES means something italian, such as all letters behind european cars used to (a lot of cars are drawn in Italy)
like
GT= grand tourisimo
S = sport
GTI= Grand turisimo injectione ,
ES = extraditionale sexi ?

(sorry for my bad italian<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /laugh.gif ALT=":lol"> )

over the years I guess this has a bit changed

I put my "money" on mr Wiltens opinion.

fr.gr.JPF

OK, I'll put my Classic Car anorak on....again...
The P1800ES was called because: The 'P' was for 'Personal Car', the 'E' was for 'Injection' (Enjection??) just like German cars, and the 'S' was for cars built in 'Sweden' after 1963. All estates were P1800ES (even thought they are 2 litre), but I don't think all ES's were estates. Confused? Me too, but I go with the theory that the 480ES was named as a tribute the the P1800ES. But anyway, I thought the Svensk word for Estate began with a V??<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o">

Just remembered something for the ES debate

My brother owns a 96 460 1.9TD ES

When we bought it from the dealer i was told it was a rare option pack as it was the last of the ones from the factory.

The pack gave it alloys , boot spolier , sports suspension and front fogs.

The strange thing was that the car has a front fog switch and it works and the light on the dash comes on. BUT there are no front fogs on the car as it needs the hole where the fogs should have been to feed the intercooler!!!

So anyone on here who worked in the factory explain this oversight!!!!!!

And i have to say the sports suspension it has got its superb. The 460 can out handle my 480 no problems!!!!!!

I guess Daniel is right.

What happened: production of the P1800 started in 1961 @ Jensen in the UK. 2 years later production was transferred to Sweden. So P1800 became P1800 S. Later on they built an estate version which became the P1800 ES.

Levensnevel

Surely by now everyone knows that due to the water in the boot, ES stands for En Suite !
