Electric Aerial
Hi

Can anyone tell me if the 480 electric aerial is a 'Volvo only' part or whether a standard replacement from Halfords/Autoparts would fit just as well.

My wife had an argument with a tree branch and tried to convince me that the aerial at a 45 degree jaunty angle looked better than the original!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

ta

d00dler

Re: Electric Aerial
You can buy the individal parts from volvo. I think the attena is about £15.

As for replacements from halfords, you will have the following problems.
1. The wiring connection will be different so you will have to cut the wiring and join them yourself.
2. The bit where the attena comes out is a dealer only part and can sometimes seize on. Which means you will have to buy it anyway.

You best bet is to just go to the dealer and buy the attena.

Re: Electric Aerial
While on the subject of aerials!!!
Mine is jammed down, it just makes a loud buzzing when I turn the radio on. Will I have to replace the whole unit??? I expect when I see the price I will wish I never bought a Volvo!

Re: Electric Aerial
I had the same problem with mine.

I took it out and opened it up to find that the plastic bit that push it up had snapped. So all that was happening was that the motor was turning.

I bought the replacement from Volvo forabout £15.

Then i went through the carwash and broke the dam thing<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/roll.gif ALT=":rollin">

So i went back to the manual arieal. This give better reception in my opinion. But some kids snapped that<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/mad.gif ALT=">:">

So i'm going to go to DAB now. Thats the future.

Re: aerial
Digital Audio Broadcasting - Digital Radio - still very expensive though - my header unit can do DAB, but the receiver is still too expensive for what it is - I'll stick with the CDs and MP3s in-car <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

1995 480 Turbo, Flame Red Metallic, Jacquard/Leather

Re: aerial
the DAB control units in the last 12 months have come down from £350 down to lower than £150.

With DAB you get crystal clear radio additional station only avilable on DAB. When you go through a tunnel you don't loose reception.

Believe it or not DAB has been around for some 6 or 7 years now.

I'm thinking of an MP3 head unit aswell as my stardard unit but too affraid of quality loss

Re: aerial
DAB control unit != DAB receiver, but that's by the by. DAB is still far too expensive for me to warrant buying right now, after all, it is just radio - now if DAB supported jukeboxing and stream per demand, then that would be worth having, but the likes of Radio1 is poor enough on their music selection without being able to get it in tunnels too <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> - as for quality - contraversial view coming up, but it's a car for goodness sake, not an auditorium!!!! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> Personally (another contreversial view) I am too busy concentrating on the road and other road users to actually be able to focus on in car music sufficiently to note quality or lack thereof - music becomes background for me, so quality is a poor argument to spend over the odds for a new tranny <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

1995 480 Turbo, Flame Red Metallic, Jacquard/Leather

Why does it have to come up when you're listening to a CD? Does this happy to everyone else? Pity it would only appear when the radio was selected; can't listen to the CD in the carwash!

Re: Electric Aerial
The only way you could stop this is to put in an over ride switch.

Bee Sting!
My elec wing aerial was completely missing from my newly bought ES: so I went to Halfords earlier and got a bee-sting aerial - like that on a Golf GTI 16V (mk2) - and fitted it about 7 inches from the back of the roof....looks pretty good IMHO! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Hi,

Yes, and if you are starting the car after starting the radio, the antena goes up and down, as you start the car.It looks quit funny.
Ps I donot like any alterations like a small antenna on the roof. (but thats a question of taste) also because you make a hole in it. (doesn't the roof leak enough?)

Luck,
JPF
