Rear defroster

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Rear defroster

Post by Silver Turbo » Tue Feb 04, 2003 5:19 pm

Have the wires in the rear window have stopped working, they don't heat anymore so it only sort of gets half defrosted <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ferent.gif ALT=":|">
Does anyone know what the cause could be and how one can fix this?
Volvo for life, 480 for eternity.

I meant "half the wires" of course...
Volvo for life, 480 for eternity.

I wouldn't mind knowing what the options are for this too, annoyingly, only one of my wires doesn't work - the one that clears the strip at my eye level! typical <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

1995 480 Turbo, Flame Red Metallic, Jacquard/Leather

its normally that the wire has got a break in it somewhere eg the glass has got sratched and cut the wire on the glass, i have the same problem and when i checked with a meter found that there was a break in each wire that was not heating so i had to get a replacement rear window

hmm... strange, that's what I thought it might be but I can see no place where these wires are cut.
As for replacing the rear window, that's a rather expensive proposition, especially if it's just for the darn defroster! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /alien.gif ALT="0]">
Volvo for life, 480 for eternity.

rear demister

Post by TheXile » Tue Feb 04, 2003 9:53 pm

I had the same problem with another car I had ( Morris Marina Coupe - rest its soul ), and have lost 3 wires on my baby celebration.
Probably due to my dog or over exuberant cleaning.
Any-hoo, I got this small vial of liquid metal from a motor factors which was made for the job, so I painted over the break and "voi-la", complete circuit.
I haven't bothered to fix these 3 wires, but I'm going to look for another vial to do the job.
You should see the break in the wire when you start the demister; look along the dead wire and you should see a tiny clear spot where the current seems to be trying to cross the gap. I know 'cause I've seen it.
Good luck
Gedda<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/nerd.gif ALT="8o">

Rear window defroster

Evening,

This is an ancient problem, and there used to be a special paint available to 're-touch' the scrathced filament. Use a test lamp, and a piece of tinfoil to find the break, and try to use a high-solid metallic paint to re-paint the line. It might work, it might not.

Phil
