Miles per gallon

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Miles per gallon

Post by CHESH740R » Sat Feb 01, 2003 8:41 pm

What kind of mileage are you getting from your beast??

My recently aquirred 480 1.7inj did 26MPG on the last tank and i really tried to drive ecconomically for that tank of petrol.

I allways fill up when i get down to 2 bars on the guage which equates to 240miles in my case.

I found a diary from about 5 years ago when i had my first 480 which is identical to my current one and i had written down that i was getting easily 30 to 35mpg to the gallon and doing over 300miles to a tank.

I wonder what the difference is. When i Mot'd the car the emmisons test confirmed it wasnt running rich in fact it was running a little lean.

Is 26 mpg normal. i do a mix of town and a road driving. I just wish i could get the figures i was getting 5 years ago.

Miles per gallon...

Post by Joey » Sun Feb 02, 2003 6:46 pm

On average I get about 38 miles to the gallon from my ES even though she's covered 170,000 miles. I do a mixture of driving, most of which is not motorway driving.

<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">

Well perhaps its been my fast driving of late thats bringing the MPG down.

I am trying what i call the taxi driver economy mode at the moment.

ie changing gear at 2000rpm religously and trying never to use the brakes and lose any built up speed.

So far the average on the puter is showing 32mpg.

Out of interest, I read an article in an old motoring mag about economical driving. It stated that it was ok to use about 2/3rds throttle for accelaration as long as you change gear by 3500rpm and as you already stated, to avoid using your brakes. Instead plan ahead so that you don't 'over accelarate'. The rest was about aerodynamics such as roof racks and windows being open etc and correct tyre pressures. But the most important was a well tuned/serviced/maintained engine. So no suprises there then...
Incidentally, in another article, one of their columnists stated that he NEVER drove just for the fun of it and couldn't get excited about driving at all. His name?? One Jeremy Clarkson c1989....

My 92 Turbo gets about 400 miles out of a tank around town and 500 on the motorway at 80mph+. If I can be buggered and change at 2K on the tacho I can easily get 500mls around town or 500mls+ at 70mpg. No BS. I think you need to do a basic service if you're only getting 26mpg, either that or modify the right foot procedure. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

My '95 turbo only gets about 300-330 per tank on mixed journeys, but mainly around town. How does yours get 500+???? My car has a "proper" Volvo service at all the correct times, and has done all it's life, so why do I get such a low MPG (and it's not right foot action either!)... Worried now... <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes"> I have a ~50 litre tank by the way, in case you have a much bigger one (oo-er)!

1995 480 Turbo, Flame Red Metallic, Jacquard/Leather
Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub32.ezboard.com/bvolvo480.show ... gonlord at: 2/4/03 10:58:54 am

Hi,

Now we are talking about usage of fuel....

Isn't it better to talk about a solution to decrease the fuel usage? Things like air filters, spark plugs can help though? what are other solutions to decrease the usage.

It seems to be that there's much difference between 480's, so there must be a solution in my thoughts

Grtz, Mark

Red Volvo 480 Turbo '91 (b18ftm)

I am driving really conservative at the moment to see how much i can get out of it.

The car has new plugs, distributor , leads , air filter and so on. Tyre Pressures are set correctly so as not to cause rolling resistance.

The only thing i think it needs is setting up properly on a rolling road . Does anybody know a good rolling road place???

The other thing to remember when quoting what you can get out of a tank is that later 480's have 60 litre tanks compared to early ones with 480's

Mine has 48 litres. Dragon lords i'm guessing will have a 60 litre tank so his mpg would be about the same as mine based on what he is getting out of a tank.

Keeping windows shut helps reduce drag.
Air Con sucks about 2-3 mpg ussually if switched on.
Headlights in the up position cause drag.

I know it depends on driving styles a lot. I Remember in my first 480 on a journey i never exceeded 50mph and not a lot of revs and i recorded something silly like 65mpg.

If you want MPG get a diesel!!!
i've got a 480 Turbo - i emphasize the word Turbo
i mean changing gear at 2500 revs - Whos that in your back seat? Miss Daisy?
Change Gear at 5000 rpm , enjoy the power and get 29 mpg!

I couldn't agree more! I don't give a rat's arse about my economy (what I wrote was for boring educational *yawn* purposes) and I get an average economy of about 29mpg too, according to the 'pooter. But as far as 500miles to a tank??? I don't think many cars can actually carry enough fuel to do that!! 500miles from 60litres is 12 miles /litre or approx 60 mpg. My bike doesn't even do that!!In fact even top econo cars don't get that around town!! And lets hope it isn't a 48 litre tank. Sir, I think you must live on a motorway and never have to slow down for traffic queues and you are very lucky. My idea of town driving is sitting in traffic taking 4 times as long to get anywhere as it would on empty roads. I think you should sell your car back to Volvo for research purposes...<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)">

Edited by: <A HREF=http://pub32.ezboard.com/bvolvo480.show ... emonkey at: 2/4/03 10:32:08 pm
