engine too hot
I've the following problem.

when i drive at normal speed the water-temperature is about 90/95 degrees celcius.
when I have to brake, an must stop the car, the water-temperature shoots to 105/110 degrees celcius and the computer says 'STOP'.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... rassed.gif ALT=":o">

does anyone have an idea what could be wrong?

Thanks!

Martijn

engine too hot
First, I'd check the fan's working. Seemes obvious, but....
Second, check the temp sensor switch isn't shorting out. Check simple things like the water level, and if the water pump is working properly. Does it do it if the engine is cold?? if so is probably an electric fault.
Anyone else got a clue??

Re: engine too hot
If the checks mentioned above are fruitless, I'd be checking for a blockage in the cooling system, probably a sludged up radiator. For comparison my water temperature shows around 75 celcius in normal driving conditions.

overheating
Good point! A reverse-flush of the cooling system would be a good idea, preferably after using a Flushing Compound like the one sold by Holts.

Re: overheating
I also had the same prob. Mine was solved by replacing the seal/ring that fits the thermostatically controlled tap (really dunno the English explanation of it) to the head section of the engine. The previous owner did some things by himself, regarding to maintenance. Due to this my engine was leaking cooling liq...The seal/ring was very bad positioned.

And secondly: Some time ago I pushed my 480T accidently over it's 'top' by accelerating a little to fast. Effect: some pressure was built up in the liq. reservoir, which also cannot be very well for cooling. Simply released the pressure by opening the reservoir, prob. was solved...?!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /smile.gif ALT=":)">

Maybe it could also be your water pump that has to be replaced. Don't tink this is the real prob though...

Gtrz/groeten,
Ton

Re: overheating
The Fan is working fine, but when the fan turns on the water temperature stays at the same high temp.

Thanks for all your help.

Martijn

Re: overheating
So you hear the auxhilary fan start up. Would indicate that coolants not flowing. Pump or blockage.

It seems to me that this heat is taken up in part by the oil, as it shoots up several degrees C as the water temp drops back down. Anyone agree with this experience?

Re: overheating
Martijn
Does your interiorheater give really good heat?
When not thasn there is the possibilty that the heatermatrixcore (radiator van de verwarmingsinstallatie) from the heater is blocked. This results in less possibility for the nmotor the disperse of the generated heat.
And therefore higher enginetemperature.
The reason for this is that the heatermatrix is integrated in the coolingsystem and always used by the waterflow for cooling.
If you engage the heater you open airflaps and not a watervalve.
So check this first.
An onther possibilty is taht you have a thermostat with
a to high openeing temperatue.
Try to borrow a thermostat that opens at 83° C and see if this betters the engine temperature situation.
Have you already changed your temperaturefeeler to check if this could be faulty.
Goodluck
gerrsvolvo
