Strange behavior on 4000-5000 Rpm

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Strange behavior on 4000-5000 Rpm

Post by Daniel Marques » Tue Nov 26, 2002 1:26 am

I´m finding a problem on my 480:
When it reachs about 4000 rpm (mostly on 3rd and 4th gear), gives some kicks like if the car was runing out of gaz and it tends to kindda loose power and the problem disapears after the 5000 Rpm just to happen again when i gear up. As far as Portuguese Volvo says its a common problem for earlier turbo-charged engines on 440 and 480 models but they didnt say why, so i hope that someone here at least heard about it and can give me a hand, for at least i know what im paying for to repair <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/wink.gif ALT=";)"> .

If this was already discussed in some topic please someone tell me where so i can read it (the messageboard is huge) <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
Daniel Marques

Daniel,
I have the same problem with my '88 ES non-turbo. At about 4500 RPM it starts to hesitate, and will not pull beyond 110 mph on the flat. I have changed the fuel regulator a couple of times, and will next try the Fuel filter. I might even put a stronger fuel pump on.
It is highly annoying, because I know that the car will go faster, yet tonight I couldn't overtake a Corsa! The turkey wouldn't move out of the overtaking lane, and I couldn't get past him.

Phil

Distributor cap and rotor arm?? Known to be very unreliable in the 340 (same 1.7) although better in the 480. Leaks oil through camseal and eats them in daily use. Consider replacing.
Had similar problem but more evident coming on boost at lowish speeds. Insufficient spark under load basically.

Dan,

the Dizzy cap is new, but the rotor is not, and I'm pretty sure that the camshaft oil seal seeps a bit. I'll check both of them, and get back to you, but thanks for the tip.

Just put winter tyres on the car with hideous Chromed Hubcaps. I need the winter boots (it tends to snow a bit here) and the naked steel wheels weren't doing anything for me.

Phil, Germany
