Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Think the title says it all..... didnt even get the oppertunity to photo her with the new clear front blinkers in :(

Looked out the window at about 11.00 sunday night and there she wasnt! A few mates were round at mine so we ran outside only to be greated by the smell of V Power and a hand full of shattered glass on the floor. We went charging out of my street in search of the little theiving pikeys while I called anyone I could think of that would still be out and about asking them to keep their eyes open for her. Called the police and got the obligitory "fuck off, were busy" line, we'll send someone tomorrow! (useless cunts)

We finally found her at about 2.00 in the morn and amazingly only about 100 yards from where she was stolen! Living at the top of a hill has its drawbacks.... they had just drifted down through the streets to a secluded little spot and tried to hotwire her, with amazing ineptness!!! In breaking the stearing lock they actually managed to snap the entire stearing colum and had flung the wheel in to some nearby hedges. Moving the car was going to be almost impossible so another call was made to the police to inform them it was found and what state it was in, another "fuck off, were busy" later and i'm ready to blow my top by this point. After blowing a gasket with the area command centre to car was collect and taken to a recovery yard.

Monday came and the phone bill rocketed! Insurance, coppers, recovery yards. I went to collect my stuff from the car while it was in the recovery yard and after forensics had been at it. Kicked to fuck! It was up on a forklift when i found it with every corner knocked off it, covered in mud, dents and scratches that even the little nobs who nicked it didnt even manage to create. I then found out from the recoverers that my insurance co had organised for the vehicle to be collected by a salvage company as it was writen off as a complete loss! I had hoped to buy the car back, put a new stearing colum, ignition barrel, some wiring and a passenger quarterlite and the jobs a good 'un.... or so i thought. The cars a absolute mess now

BASTARDS!!!!! (and dont just mean the cocks who twoc'd her!)

What a fuckin' cock up.

Mate, really sorry to hear it. Alleyway and baseball-bat spring to mind-such a shame as i quite liked your 480 too. Can't you get on to somebody at the insurers about the fact they wrote your car off without notifying you? And what about the breakers? Don't they have to leave it a certain amount of time before they can start scrapping a car with an insurance job?

Hope something good manages to come out of this for you dude, thats really harsh. Whats wrong with an XR2i or something? Fuckin' knob jockeys.

That's really bad news - sorry to hear that, mate. Sounds a bit unfair, too. A few nasty letters might sort that problem out. Surely the scrapyard can't get away with that.
My home town's having a few problems of its own at the moment. Not too keen on going back there for Christmas! There's scum everywhere, it looks like. I've had little twats hacking away at my locks before. Chased them down the street, but it's no good cos they always come back, and we're not 'allowed' to protect our own property without getting into more trouble than the thieves themselves!? It's crazy. Luckily they didn't get in, but it's not just the stealing the car that's the problem (if they get past the immobiliser), it's the damage they do if they CAN'T steal it.

Hope you get some sort of justice at the end. Best of luck mate.

what is this world coming to! You get your car collected and taken to a 'safe recovery yard' and they even more damage to it, its crazy and not acceptable!! I'm really not suprised that you are fuming, I would be too.
Hope some good comes out of all this.

Wo, sorry to hear of your troubles. I've had so many incidents round here I only bother to call the police out of spite to screw up their crime detection rates, you've have more luck getting a small hamster to track down the culprits round here.

However, the insurance company (assuming they instructed the recovery) are now totally screwed as the company involved has damaged your property. This means with a little careful coaxing and a bit of moaning to the right person you can probably get a far higher settlement than you would have otherwise. The insurers own your car when you agree a settlement for it, not until. Thus the car is still legally yours, and the breakers have damaged your property, which I’m pretty certain is criminal damage in this instance. Assuming the insurance company decided on the firm to appoint, they are 100% liable for that as they are the people you have the contract with not the breakers. Because of this, you can use the threat of legal action for criminal damage to push your settlement to something a little fairer. The insurance company won't like it, but don't take any crap from them. When a 3rd party damages your vehicle, they have to pay the full cost of repair or the actual cost of a replacement, and not just the insurance adjusted figures. If you claimed for this additional damage separately, you want to do this directly with the insurers of the liable party, NOT through your own insurance, or they will just screw your premiums even more.

I hope the above makes some sense and helps in some way. If there is anything I can help you with feel free to chuck me a PM or an e-mail. Bear in mind that certain specifics regarding the matter may obviously change where your rights stand though.

Good luck with things, and I hope it gets sorted best as possible for you.

Jeez! what a damn shame

sounds like good advice from MGB_GT there - surely the insurers have no right to decide what to do with your property until you authorise them to take specific action?

So now for all of us, should anyone have a car recovered from a theft or accident -
do we now have to think ahead, be suspicious, and have to speak to the insurers about who will be uplifting the car (salvage yard or garage) , how it will be uplifted, what they will be doing with it, and where they will be taking it?

You just don't expect to have to have ask all these things - you would expect the insurers, to take care of your property until it the damage is assessed properly and in person by an assessor before risking anymore damage to the car that they have to pay for..........

....and this is what we pay premiums for ............

hope you get things sorted out

That's terrible! I hope you can get it sorted to your satisfaction. Personally, I wouldn't have my car towed anywhere but my place till I sorted out what was going to be done with it. My Dad got caught like that years ago and nearly lost the tools he had in the boot. He allowed the car to be towed to a tow company's yard and found that he wasn't allowed to touch it. Fortunately the tow truck driver put him wise to it and told him to grab his tools before the insurance company assessors arrived. We have been careful with insurance companies ever since.
My 480 is insured with a company who specialize in old and collector cars, including racing cars. You can choose your own repairer and always have the option of keeping the wreck. Their premiums are very reasonable too. All of the people who work for the company have to be enthusiasts and must pass a 100 question test on their car knowledge to get a job there. They come out and admire your car when you take it round to them. All of my family use them because we all own old cars.

Quick update.....

Finally sorted out a "pay out" with the insurers. Mite be worth noting that if you want anything more than about £500 for your old 480 Celeb / GT / Turbo etc, should the worst ever happen! then you better call your insurers NOW and pre-arrange a value of the vehicle. I even supplied receipts for only the last 6 months alone which came to around £900!

The 480 is now heading back to me at long last (god only knows what sort of condition i'll get her back in) and will probably be broken up so let me know if theres anything your after (luuurvly turbo motor and box with only 77k ;) )

And finally, on a happier note heres the new motor......
