"Old Chestnut" - Child Seats for a 480

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

"Old Chestnut" - Child Seats for a 480

Post by CitizenSmith » Mon Dec 04, 2006 7:48 pm

I wonder if anyone on here can help with a problem I face.

I got "clearance" from the missus to get *another* 480 on the proviso that I get a child seat that will be safe for our 18 month old daughter.

Having tried a few out in the back, without success at both John Lewis *and* Halfords, I've now resorted to getting a quote from Volvo on their 400 series specialist seat... if they are still available. The pic of the childseat in the main site reminds me more of an instrument of totrture rather than something that is designed to keep my baby girl safe! Do they *really* fit on the back of the front seats?

I wonder if any other members can post me any constructive replies about brands that *will* ideally fit the back seats. The passenger side of my 480 Celebration is without airbag so she could go there, but the parts man at Volvo, Leatherhead has filled me with some worry by talking of both a £200 price tag and some accessories for the seat itself, which kinda implies that the passenger seat becomes the baby seat forever, (which is rubbish).

Hopefully someone can help out. Does seem a very friendly and helpful place this...

Hi mate,

Not sure about the volvo seats but ahve heard of other seats fitting by chnaging the rear seatbelts to longer ones. Think 740/740 were mentioned?

It's not hard to change them and it means that you can get the biger seats to sometimes fit.

Good luck,

I am planning to weld or bolt Isofix (easyfix) (Quickfix) brackets to the car, so any aproved childseat will fit in.

I have a Graco booster seat which fits fine in the passenger seat - not sure if they do a similar range for infants, but might be worth a try.

Mothercare own brand. Have my two year old in it. Just make sure you tension them properly and they're fine. About the £65 mark I think from memory. You can even get one of the girls from Mothercare to come and clamber about in the back of your car with you to fit it!

Oh, I don't have the rear headrests if that makes any difference to the fitting. I know in the wife's Spacewagon we have to remove the headrests to allow the seat to recline properly.

Never a truer word (or two)

Trouble is you've either got to already have got kids, be over a 'certain' age or have some medical reason to get it done on the NHS down here.

Did you ever get around to doing this?
With our first due in May, we've just come from mothercare where they would not pass ANY of the seats to be fitted in Amy's 440:
the front seat the belt is about 18 inches too short, and in the rear, due to the buckles emerging towards the middle of the seat cushion, in an impact the seat can twist under the belt.

The company skoda isn't a problem, (isofix and/or miles of spare belt) but when I'm 60-odd miles away and @Amy wants to go somewhere as it stands she'll be a bit stuck.

this issue isnt just restricted to volvo 400's. Our discover 7 seater is the same. Not enough seat belt.

What we have done is buy a seat belt extention which is universal.

That would solve the problem for the first fw months, what I'm planning to do now is get some FIA approved spreader plates and relocat the rear buckles back to the rear of the seat cushion.
Of course this requires removal of the fuel tank to get access, so I'm procrastinating about it now.
Would be a shame to get another car, it just passed the MOT first time - that day there were 5 other cars went in, ours was the oldest by a long way and the only one to pass :D
