My new project / toy ...
Let me introduce you to Petra my new petrol blue ES.
Aquired for nowt from a very nice man in Edinburgh who has had her for the last 16 years.
102,000 miles and generally in very good nick. Her body is superb for the age apart from a few minor dinks and scratches. Her rear arches were done fairly recently and it seems to be a pretty good job although there is a little rust coming through at the front of the passenger side arch.
The doors are in great condition with hardly any signs of rust at all. The cloth on the seats is also in very good nick and all that lets the interior down are a few bits of cracked plastic here and there (should have spares in the garage for most).
She's needing MOT'd and will need an exhaust, a front wheel bearing and the back brakes / handbrake sorting out, but hopefully not much else. She's good and solid on the road and has fewer interior creaks and rattles than Dave so she maybe hasn't been driven as hard.
Apart from a crack along the top edge of one rear cluster they are in remarkable condition.
I've been told they weren't replaced at any time by the previous owner which means they must be at least 16 years old, and probably original at closer to 18 years. Anyone know if Volvo changed the plastic the clusters are made of?
On the way home with her from Edinburgh over a 25 mile run of mixed driving she averaged 42 mpg!. All in all I'm well chuffed and can't wait to get her back on the road.

Well she may be pretty on the outside, but the saying "Beauty's only skin deep." comes to mind after investigating the ubiquitous puddle in the boot. Not the usual leaky lights here I'm afraid, possibly a slightly dodgy tailgate rubber but the main problem is serious rust around about where the top edge of the bumper is.
After removing all the plastic trim it looked pretty grim and a quick prod with a screw driver opened up numerous holes where it's fairly obvious most of the water's getting in.
The question now is is she worth saving? There's a fair bit of work invloved in cutting all that rotten metal out and welding in new stuff. A fair few tricky bits to shape new metal for as well, and I'll have to get myself a welder. On top of everything else that's needing done is this enough to tip the balance towards (dare I say it) parts car?
Any suggestions on solutions much appreciated, but at the moment it doesn't look so good.

Would the repaired area be visable from the rear Ally? If not I'd just cut/grind out the affected area and Mig patch and prime/underseal it.
If it is visable then you'd really want to joddle the patches in and fill & paint the whole area to the nearest join/edge.
Or grind/Krust and P45 it! (Bodge option).
Shouldn't have looked that gift horse up the rear huh?

She does look lovely. My first ES looked like that in the boot but I didn't have the time or money then to do anything about it so I just drove it until I found a better one. You know you will probably make more money out of it as a spares car but putting it back on the road it better me thinks.

poor Petra
I know if you are going to fix her up, you'll do it right because you don't believe in botching.........and remember, you have an assistant to help who knows a thing or two about metal
Me finks - put her in for an mot check to see if it throws up any other scariness, then make a decision.
