yeah I agree.....and I guess a cabriolet would have to be aimed at the american market.....not so much now but in the mid to late eighties certainly.....what american market we all ask!!!!?Brasco wrote:I just don't think the 480 was selling well enough for another variant unfortunately. cabrio
It´s pity that the cabrio never went in production but the main reason with no doubt is that the car never went to USA. Volvo 480 already was a very expensiv car and the cabrio would be even more...
As far as I know it´s only exist two real cabrios at this time. A blue(318) one and a red one. The blue one stands on the Volvomuseum. The red one I´m not sure but I saw it on a Volvo-meeting in Holland 1999. Maybe anyone knows...?
Is there any cabrio-project goin´ on somewhere???
That would be a dream to drive a 480-cabrio some time or at least touch one...

I believe the red one is indeed in the Volvo nuclear-withstandable bunker in Beesd (NL) - only to emerge if someone who's able to pull the right strings at Volvo comes along. (sadly not me..)
A 480 Cabrio remains a dream, but anyone who's willing to spent several hours in the evenings for a couple of years and who has a shed where he can do things should be able to create such a masterpiece
Daniel
Do you know wich other cars standing in the bunker?

I have just taken early retirement (or ceased permanent employment sounds better) and I would like to do a cabrio.
So i have collected the red pictures and it shows how difficult it is to do a neat hood although it is very good. I think a semi rigid or even a surrey my be the answer.
I have started today to create line drawings from a brochure to devlop the lines. However, it will need time, i expect 18 months as it has to be fitted in with other things in life like moving house and also contract work.

won't chopping the roof off of a 480 completely ruin its stiffness and therefore its handling? whats the plan to get around this? has it successfuly been done before? even car makers have problems with this if youve ever driven an old type C70 convertable which is a V70/S70 chassis with no roof the scuttle shake is terrible and this is a newer chasis than the 480???

but in a nice strong rollbar. I can be incorporated into the car. It gives back some strength. The floor must be suported more. Cos it is a FWD car you actualy can do what mazda did with the RX-8 a good strond and high center flor. Hiding the rollbar in there also. Ads some needed strength. At least thats what I would do.

I agree that a more modern car should be stiffer but i suspect it depends on if it was designed to be a rag top.
My thoughts were to put a pressed steel diapragm across the car behind the rear seats and by picking up across the tunnel and wheel arches you are connecting up stiff assemblies.
Hey, whos afraid of scuttle shake - ever driven a TR2 on a bendy road?the scuttle shake is terrible

small triangular plates from bottom of B pillar to floor help with longditudenal (spl) strength IIRC.....seen it done on minis quite often....again, IIRC once you take the roof off, its mainly a question of bracing lengthways, to stop the car folding at the B pillar say.....
width strength can be put back in easy with a roll bar, or floor bracing
get a beetle.....good chassis, so you can cut the body to bits and not worry
