All 400 series have the same waterpump, the same as the Renaults with F3-engine have. There was a different design in the earlier models, which has been replaced by a more efficient one. Again, all are compatible.
There is no need to replace the head gasket if it's not leaking. But it can definitely do no harm if you adjust the valve clearance.

Oh I didn't mean to say that the head should be lifted to adjust valve clearance, by all means, no! Just lift the valve cover (and put a new gasket in afterwards)
Many people forget valve clearance adjustment needs to be done every 25,000 miles or 40,000 km and it will seriously increase performance if it was neglected (or burn the exhaust valves if neglected for too long)

Definitely not remove things that do not need to be removed (unless you are looking for work )
Oh by the way, the instrument cluster has arrived! Someone really made a work of art by twisting wire ends into each other, cutting the wrong circuit traces (it could have been done much, much simpler!) and insulating the bulbs with pieces of plastic. What it did was lighting the ABS and SRS lamp together with the oil pressure lamp. It is a known "fix" amongst mechanics to make a car MOT-proof this way...
I have reversed the modification, i.e. restored the circuit traces and removed the wires.
The SRS lamp does not have to work for the MOT, so if it stays on even if you have connected the 2-pin white plug to the back, and you can't rectify the fault (there is a way to read the error codes), it is just a matter of removing the bulb and the MOT inspector will be happy.
However, the ABS lamp needs to work, as a fault in the ABS system might lead to potential dangerous situations. I would try and find the fault first. Meanwhile I can devise the a kind of circuitry for the ABS lamp in order to fool the MOT inspector, but in the end you will be fooling yourself.

The brakea are top on my list, I tend to fix the brakes on every car I buy. There isnt really much to them an good rebuild cant fix. I use a company for the ABS pumps when they need tlc. during the week I will get a look at the calipers to see which type are fitted. Brake discs and pads alround alond with any hoses and pipes.
What and the slave and masters does anyone know the part numbers?

Any idea what ABS state you've got? Or failing that, post an engine bay pic and someone is bound to know!

By the way, was the reset button of the trip counter already broken when you sent it, or did it break off during transit? Anyway, I have an awful lot of spares so there's another one in there now at no extra cost.

Atleast with them back to factory condition it eliminates them from the fault finding process

Quick question.
The brake pads and discs front and rear. Are they the same for all models.
The car is currently at my friends so not quite easy to check at the moment.

They weren't really bad, I've seen far, far worse. Luckily the mods done by the previous owner's mechanic could be reversed with little effort.arthuy wrote:it was already broken thanks for repairing them.

By the way, I have completely forgotten to replace the 2 bulbs in the ventilation module. I had a look at the car tonight and thought I would check the fault codes for the ABS as the dash had been bodged.
I havent had the dash back so perhaps this is why it didnt work for me.
Jumper moved to position 3, turned ignition to II, waited about 10 sec. pressed the button for more than 1 second but less than 3 and nothing. the LED was a dim red, if I press the button the LED becomes bright when the button is pressed but no blinking.
Tried to work out if the brakes are lucas or not, they look like Lucas but it was hard to see through the alloy. Plenty of meat left on the pads so can wait until I get the car back together.
It looks like the brake pipes to the pump have been replaced at some point but I will replace them all and make a neater job of it.

I should add that the button for the LED seems to have been opened at some point, maybe the case had just popped a bit. is the module reliable?

If running new pipes just go STRAIGHT across the bulkhead saves the torturous route the originals took, and note that the pipe(s) from ABS goes to REAR in a SINGLE SECTION
but if ain't broke . . . . .. . (bleed nipples are known to shear off )

It arrived just as I was leaving for the weekend.
Seems to be in one piece so will get it back together and see what else is not working.

Got the dash refitted today. unfortunatley the mot ran out on monday so no test drive.
The heating doesnt work following removal of the bodge, further checks to be done there.
Brakes, looks like lucas solid disc set up to me, front pins almost siezed, brake shields about to fall off too.
I need to find out where the horns fit, mine was cable tied to a tube under the radiator so assume that wasnt the original volvo spec.
Whilst I was under there I found some rust. which needs dealt with.
still cant get any srs or abs codes, I did clean the jumper and got a code for the engine which looked like 1-4-2 so something works.
