Volvo 480 Off road?

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Volvo 480 Off road?

Post by Max480T » Tue Nov 15, 2005 11:33 pm

We all know how well the 480 performs on road, but what about off road, let's give it a try!

Today I came in the situation that I had to test the off road capabilities of my 480.
I think it's interesting to post a short list of my findings

The terrain was just mud everywhere with some puddles, not very deep and I had to drive through it.
Well I tried it and my conclusion: A 480 isn't very good when driving off road :(
it lacks 4x4 and ground clearance, the back end is just too light and slides too easily. :o

BUT!, it was great fun! :hopping: ofcourse I cleaned the whole car afterwards.

I was pretty careful when driving in the mud (don't want to hurt her, she will take revenge....)
but my already beat up front spoiler partially broke off :?

Anyone selling a turbo spoiler somewhere around The Netherlands...?

And are there any other 480 owners who played in mud?

Greetings Max

P.s. I didn’t take any pictures of this muddy event, I didn't want to embarice her :D

Greta scrapes her exhaust driving around Reading - and thats on standard suspension. Off road - you're all right.

All though I've seen a Volvo 480 set up as a rally car. It was what sparked my boyhood love of the 80's wedge.

Nothing for the money, in my humble opinion, beats a Volvo 340 for off-road rallying fun. Except maybe a 360 GLT... :)

I would have thought that exhaust clearance (and front spoiler if fitted) would have be the big drawbacks here - don't think I've ever owned a car with such a crappy exhaust set up before.

Mine catches on everything higher than a grasshoppers knee, even although it's pretty new and all the mountings (down to the 2 rubber bands in the middle that snap every 6months) are in good nick.

Why they didn't tuck it up into the floorpan a bit I don't know.

Chris and i had a bash at mud track, banger racing 480's for a couple of years... Good fun, did pretty well. P.s the back end kicks out a treat in the wet. Lots of opposite lock and leaves yougrinning ear to ear :D
