Super Unleaded
Hello 480 fans
I went to pick up my 2 nd Volvo 480 at the weekend and I still can't believe what great condition it is in (1988 ES). So after it made it home around the M25 I pulled up to the pumps and thought ' I'll give her a treat ' and stuck a load of super unleaded in the tank thinking this might clean the engine out and make it run even better.
I'm pretty sure this was a bad idea because the engine kept shuddering almost to the point of stalling every mile or so down the road.
I drove it this morning and it seemed to be fine but haven't been able to give it a proper run yet.
Has any one else put super unleaded in their 480? I know I won't be in future.

Could it be the age old dodgy idle problem surfaces with the car. My 92 1.7 es runs great on optimax.
480 Twin Tone 1.7 ES now withOUT induction kit, mmm... peacefull.

Well, I found that a B18E better ran on Ron 98 then on V-power RON97 (but I believe the petrol aren't same spec in the different countries). It didn't ran smooth on V-power and I ran several tanks with it. On Ron98/ Super it certainlywas willing to rev into the red (good book too )
It was running OK on 95 as well, but Super smells better. So I put that most of the time in the tank.
But this is in the Netherlands

They do say when you put any type of 'cleaner' into an OLD engine you run the risk of it dislodging crud and causing a problem.Break-neck wrote:Dunno. Just took it for a quick run and all seems to be fine now. Could have been crap clearing out the carb or something? ah well, on wards and up wards.
Remember my mate putting an oil additive into his engine to clean it - was an old Herald - the bottom end went within a week as all the amalgamated crud that had built up over the last 20yrs came off the piston liners/etc and engine was kaput.
I think sometimes the old 'if it ain't broken don't fix it' is true.
Glad your 480 made a recovery anwyay!
Stu.

Had the same problem a while back with the GT (2.0i also). It just didn't want to go anywhere as soon as I reached about 1,500rpm or changed into Second. Checked everything I could think of but got it running ok and have not seen the problem occur again since.
Super unleaded runs so much better in the 480 IMHO, I find it's got more power and runs sharper without the little blips I get when running on U/L (I only did this for a few weeks coz I was broke).
