1993: Car Salesman Versus the RECESSION

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

1993: Car Salesman Versus the RECESSION

Post by Jay-Kay-Em » Tue Sep 16, 2025 7:37 pm

A BBC documentary shot in 1993 featuring an Essex "geezer" car salesman.

A fascinating era when all I cared about was dance music, my 386DX and my first copy of Max Power magazine.

You won't learn a lot but there's some good nostalgia of simpler times and a bit of car spotting.

Reminded me of the very similar "From A to B: Tales of Modern Motoring" which is a legendary documentary featuring company car reps of 1994.

Mentioned here for a brief 480 spotted on TV.....

Funnily enough I was watching that documentary the other day and spotted it! Wonder why the rear wiper was missing. Lazy attempt to fix the common sagging issue?

I don't think residual values of 480s were ever that strong. Seeing as it's an early E reg and during a recession I can't imagine it was listed for much. Around the 4-5k mark maybe?

Couldn't find any record of E228EAR anywhere. Strange, as most cars can still come up in online databases even if they'd been scrapped long ago.
Hard to tell, but looks to be Graphite Grey met(?)
