480 Turbo Exhaust

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

480 Turbo Exhaust

Post by yorkievolvo » Tue Nov 08, 2022 2:00 pm

Has anybody, in the last couple of years, bought an exhaust system for a 480 Turbo?
A corroded exhaust rendered my car an MOT failure.
As I’ve not managed to locate a Turbo exhaust system, in desperation, I’ve obtained a bog-standard system but now I have questions.
What will happen to the performance/behaviour of my car should the b-s system be installed?
Or, can the b-s system, actually, be installed or would it be too detrimental to performance?
For anybody who's interested in looking it up, the part needed is: Green Parts-book, group 25, page 126, item 26 (my b-s bit is item 10).
I'm considering cutting the new item (10) and, using a reduction joint repair kit, joining the back part to the forward part on my car (item 25).
Or, and here's another question, would it be better to remove both items 26 and 25 and connect item 10 to the car's item 6 (Cat).
Any, and all, information gratefully received.

So for the benefit of people without the parts book....

Could you not just order this?

Ordered - thanks Jeff, don'tknow how I missed that one.
Just one niggle. The company say it's suitable for an 88KW engine but not suitable for a 90KW engine.
How do I check/confirm which engine is installed in my car?
Any takers?

88kw (B18FT) and 90kw (B18FTM) is the difference between a factory power-sapping cat and the non-cat. Obviously, that has a significant difference in what exhaust is fitted.

Only in the very early days was a UK Turbo non-cat and even then it was a no-cost option (I think).

The FTM was more popular in markets with less stringent emission regulations.

Breaking down the VIN will get your engine code here

The engine code is also on a metal plate on the block, forward facing, adjacent to the TDC tool hole and oil filter.

Or, just look under the car.... if it's cat equipped, it's the lower powered 88kw "FT".

Thanks for the info - very interesting.
Now, can I ask another question - can I remove the Cat. & bin it?

The emissions requirements of the UK MoT test will mean a catalytic convertor will need to be fitted for vehicles first used 1st August 1992.

Before that date, you can remove the cat and pass at the 3.5% CO level.

There is a grace period 1992-1995 for vehicles listed in the annex that didn't have a cat from new - but no 480 exists in here. There are just some oddball Rovers and smaller manufacturers like TVR that exist in this grace period.

If you do decide to fit a decat pipe, its extra awkward because the mouth of the cat houses the O2 sensor. If you are swapping the de-cat pipe every year for the test, you have to swap the o2 sensor too, or move it upstream with a new O2 boss.

Jay-Kay-Em - thanks for the info.
If fine tomorrow will have a go at the car.
The cat will not be removed - just hope it's still working.

I bring this old thread back to life...

I'm also in the need of replacing rear silencer, and I think the car would enjoy some fresh pipes all the way from the cat back (turbo-94)

I've been in contact with CSC Marmitte but they say they don't have anything for 480 any longer (even tho it's in their catalogue...)
I've been in contact with Rakaror (Sweden) and same story there.

I've read on the forum here that there are some places in the UK that seem to be able to assist to a fair price, but no one seems to ship systems (I'm in Sweden)

One can find a few "cheap" systems online, but it's impossible to understand if it's all crap or if it's worth putting something like that on the car.
I've found Vegaz, Imasaf, Bosal and Walker. And then the one they market on Skandix put it looks kinda bad on the images. Do you guys have any idea of what one to for of these cheapers ones. Or know of any other place one could buy from?

Cheers

Hi Hoffster,

Sadly I have no knowledge of Swedish suppliers but I know the Turbo exhaust components are rare now. They are a slightly bigger bore than naturally aspirated models.

Even if you were able to find any of the pattern parts (Bosal, Walker, Timax, Klarius) they are all made of really cheap metal anyway and in my experience just don't last for a car you plan to keep.

Some owners are going the custom made stainless route - albeit with mixed success. To make a really good exhaust is incredibly time consuming and therein lies the problem (cost).

Given the rarity, is the rear silencer totally "gone" or can it be tickled with a welder in exchange for beer at a local garage?

Best of luck trying to sort.

Yeah, I guess you are right about those brands. The most expensive "cheap" one I found, was the Imasaf but I have no idea if that's because it's much better than the other brands you mention, or if they just charge more... This ie:

https://www.ebay.de/itm/404344799657

Unfortunatly, the silences is beyond repair as it moslty contains of rust. But it's not the original one. According to some papers I found it was a cheap replacement (possible Walker) that was put on the car 15 years ago. On my old 480 (from 91), the original system is still there and not a sign of rust. On this recently bough -94 it is replaced and looks like crap.

I also happened to find this one on the interweb:

https://www.roar-sportauspuff.de/es/car ... 9-ps-92-95#

Anyone with any experience? I see it's for a 2,0, but they seems to be able to change dimensions on the pipes, so I guess one can transform it into a turbo one. I'm just a bit afraid it will be a loud one, i don't want that.

hello everyone!
tell me, of course, I don't understand something, what is the problem to make a completely stainless steel exhaust from a 56 pipe, and pick up the exhaust according to the sound from the tuning? it will be longer lasting and better.
