Agreed Valuation / Mileage Insurance?

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Agreed Valuation / Mileage Insurance?

Post by M69OOE » Tue Oct 08, 2013 8:20 pm

I've acquired another 480 and am looking to insure it as a second car, with annual mileage of say 4000 and agreed valuation of £600.

Can anyone recommend a good insurer who doesn't charge a fortune?

Any pointers would be appreciated - I've used Lancaster in the past, and had a premium around £300 for 3000 miles per annum with no no claims.

Lancaster sounds good to me! I used Chaucer insurance (where do they get these names from?) for a similar price and terms

So you'll be wanting classic car insurance. It is much cheaper than the usual nonsense.

Carole Nash I can recommend very highly and include AA cover.

That's who I use, £180 for the year with 5000 miles.

Going below 5000 only made a small difference but over 5000 was quite a jump.

180 is good going, will have to give them a ring - I've only got the S70 insured at the mo, with Admiral

My apologies if you are already aware but unless things have changed, do remember that classic car policies do not build up no claims discounts.

I spent many a happy year running exotics on peanut insurance quotes only to discover I had lost my no claims discount.

Classic car policies are excellent but do be cautious to be safe and check first if this is required.

I use Lancaster insurance. I had to send a selection of photos of the car and an estimate of what I thought the car is worth. I now have an agreed value of £2400.00 (I said 2500.00, so i wasn't far out).
They also take into consideration invoices for restoration work that you have had done towards the value.
It is well worth going down the agreed route, otherwise you could loose your car for the cost of a front light on a standard policy.

Yes that’s true with the policy I have (OK if you’re getting it from another car, not so good if it’s your only car).

Also other things might not be covered compared to a standard policy, like being able to drive another car with owner’s permission. So read the small print.

I didn’t do that bit, was £20 more and meant fiddling about when I needed cover quickly. Seeing that figure and how easily it could be written off for peanuts maybe I should of thought about it a bit more.

My Dad had a recent experience with a car insurance claim involving his 26 year old Golf MK2.
A truck scraped along the rear quarter panel, and as it was not my dads fault he went through the insurance because the truck did not stop. He didn't want the car written off, and it was covered by a standard insurance policy.
The insurance assesor said it was a catogry C write off, and would cost £1500 - £2000.00 to replace the rear quarter panel.
My dad made it clear that he wanted to keep the car and for it not to be written off.
He did not leave it at the garage while being assesed (they can charge a storage fee).
Morethan looked on the internet in order to find a similar car and that would form the value, as the car was too old to be listed on their system.
They told him that a MK3 golf would cost £500.00, and he could get a GTI for that price. My dad said try finding a MK2 for that price. Ecentually they agreed £700.00 and my dad gets to keep the car. They have also agreed not the cancel the insurance policy and to let it run until it expires next year.
As the car was only a catagory C, he was lucky, also it was easier for Morethan to just let him keep the car.

If you want to keep your car after an accident you have to make it clear to all involved. Had the truck have stopped I would have urged my dad to see if the truck company would pay without going through the insurance as nobody was hurt, and I'm sure a back street body shop could repair the car for a couple of hundred as it was nothing structual.

Morethan were very helpful, they kept asking if anybody in the car was injured through whiplash, I think they make money on personal injury, but nobody was, and all they wanted was the damage repairing.
I hope this experience is helpful, the guy at the garage said it was so sad that a nice old car should be damaged how it was, my dad has had the car since it was new, even has the original purchase receipt from Wolverhampton Motor Services.
