VOLVO 480 ES REAR ARCH REPAIR PANELS

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Rear quarter panels from Volvo are £680 each side so not that bad if you ask me. Depends how good a job he's made of them. Cheapest option is to cut the rear quarters from a good car, but how many of us have even seen a 480 with good arches? I've seen one this century.

Its the evil of the free-market-economy ;)

The driver's side arch on my 1993 have surface rust but no holes yet.

The rest are virtually mark free.

Where are you getting that price from? I make it £130 + postage.

Have to email / speak to the dude to get the £170 price.

£65 is per arch panel, then its a bit more for the other little bits.

I just don't get this...

Conventional wisdom says that a repair panel for the rear wings can be had from the diagonally opposite front wing... All you go to do is find a 480 in a scrap yard (preferably that isn't run by an arse who wants £100's for 2 wings).
Chop off the lips of the front wings and use them as repair panels...

Or is this whole front wing thing a vicious urban myth?

Not sure but sounds like a good idea!

I'm worrying about rust these days. One bored sunday the angle grinder will come out, then there will be problems.

i would buy these and then just copy them in to fibreglass to bring the costs down. But its a lot of cash for me to fork out at my current place in life.

I was looking at around £100 for the pair all in with postage if made from fg

What do people think on using front wings? I've been looking at lots of cars including mine and sure enough, the front wings usually are the same.

It'd be much easier to source rust free / new front wings.

Would fibreglass arches be as good as welding metal arches in place?
Obviously they wouldn't rust, but how do you attach them?

I thought that although the front wings were the same arch shape, they flared out quite a bit more than the rears, so you'd have to have both done otherwise you'd have one wider rear arch than the other. I know it's not often one needs doing, but it does happen. The only way to find out is to do it, but who wants to be a guinea pig!

I'm know Rohan had 440 Arches on his Steel Grey 480, and i did have a picture somewhere...i'll see if i can dig it out. All i do remember is that they didn't look any different to the original arches.

I wasn't sure if they flared out more or just appeared to as the front wing is a smaller area?

I wouldn't want it to look different but wider arches could be useful for some if that were the case.

I'd like to see the pic if you still have it. Do you know if he did the work himself or a garage did it?

Cheers,

pol

Wow, thanks Dan.

That looks good. Which mine looked like that. I wonder how much filler is involved?

Any ideas how much this cost?

Thanks,

pol

i have the 480 front arches on all 4 corners :). and yes it was not very easy to fit them - the shape of the front arch is not a perfect "circle" its 1-2cm wider in the middle. they are also more flared out.

the positive effect is, you can use 9x16 wheels without any problems :)

I've no idea. I had my arches rebuilt (you'll see them if you check my diary thread) on my 480, and it cost under £200. Me and my Dad done all the prep work-cutting all the rust out, and the arches were handbuilt. It wasn't the whole arch mind, i was fortunate enough to only have the fronts of the arches at the bottom by the sill. It was my Uncles garage mind you so it was cheaper, but even then he said if it was a timed job, i'd have been looking at £300+.

Don't know if thats any help or not! Maybe PM Rohan. The price will be a little outdated, he hasn't had his Steel Grey one for a while now!

Why bother spending a load of cash when your mate can weld it up again.
