I wonder...

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

I wonder...

Post by David » Sat Jun 21, 2008 10:43 am

A friend of mine was telling me that the Mk1 Golf is being built again in America, exectly as the original was in terms of design - but with a new price tag obviously.

Got me thinking...I wonder if the same could/would ever be done with the 480, condsidering it's increasing cult status? The long sought after cabrio could then be made too!

Just a barmy day dream I was having, though I'd share it! :)

Doubt it mate, the mk1 golf was by far more popular than what the 480 was in it's hay day! And even today they are alot more sought after than most cars built at a simlar time. Volvo seem to forget that the 480 ever existed and compare new models to everthing but the 480, as much as i'd like the 480 to be risen from the dark depths of the Volvo design cabinet, it just aint happening, even if it did i hope Volvo take more than 10 minutes on building the thing properly!!!!!!!

'Modern' versions of the Golf one are still build in South Africa I know that for sure and possibly in South America to.

You suggest that a retro mk1 is build in North America and I never heard about that, I don't believe it. A reincarnation of the 480 seems unlikely to me. The machinery may no longer exist, the car has no modern safety features and the costs will be to much.
after over 10 years parted with the 1995 Volvo 480 ES 2.0

With modern eu laws they wouldn't be allowed pop up lights either!!!! :cryhard: Thats one of the best bits of the 480!!!! Anyway, considering the Volvo P1800 replacement (NO MENTION OF THE 480!!! Yes Volvo seem to have forgotten they ever made it!) is on a ford focus platform!!! :badmood: Shocking!!!! :kill: I doubt a reincarnation of the 480 would be up to much anyway!!!! :cryhard: :cryhard: :cryhard:

why would they not be allowed pop-ups? i thought it was just a styling thing that went out of fashion, didn't realise there were actually laws preventing it...

yup it became illegal-safety thing!

I guess if they took the time they could create a suitable and legal equivalent, but its time and money companies dont have, and like David said, they arent really in fashion! The sort of thing that nowadays only super and hyper car manufacturers would worry about!

For example, Rolls royce took the time to make a safety device for their spirit of ecstasy as customers would pay a mint for their rolls and a few hundred more for a retractable spirit of ecstasy is worth the extra costs. However a company like Jaguar dont have the money to waste on theirs as their customers arent so well of as a Rolls customer would be, and people wouldnt pay enough to cover the feasibilty costs. So their answer is a leaper going backwards (and i dont think this is a factory fit!!) or non at all (it is now infact liable to void insurance if a modern Jaguar has a leaper and injures someone!).

Oi! Jags are NOT Fords!! They're Tatas!!

The X-Type was the nearest to a Ford (Mondeo)
The S-Type was nearest to a Lincoln
The XF has been copied by the latest Mondeo in styling but thats all
And the XJ and Xk...leagues of their own hmmmmmmmm ;)

You say that, but everyone that has seen my 480 has asked if it has pop ups and love it! I have never had anyone dislike the styling, apart from one guy at work that drives a pick up! Need i say more! The 480 is sex on 4 wheels!

Even the very first pop-ups to be used on a car (ferrari) where more like a compromise then a design feature. They where made because u.s. regu;ation required the head light to be at a minimum height.

The same goes for our 480's. Nowadays all sharp stuff on the outside of the car is a no no as it would be hirtfull for pedestrians who fling themselves in front of cars.

The spirit of xtc being retractable has nothing to do with these regulations. They are made this way because people kept stealing them. I mean even if it is retractable, you could still drive around with the spirit showing. This would mean theres still danger of someone hitting it wright?

Yes thats true, but when I was offered a job there I went for a tour, and was also told it was to prevent people from sueing in accident, hence why impact makes them retract too!!
