Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

.....have a lovely sunny few hours cleaning and polishing the 480T today. Must admit she looks great
![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/wink.gif)
Checked the oil, and got chatting to my neighbour....shut the bonnet and later drove to town. On my way to town I smelt a hot oil smell, and it made me think.....F***K!!!! Pulled over, and asked my mate to pull the bonnet. Yeap...as expected....you guessed it....forgot to put the oil filler cap back on!!!!!
![Embarassed :oops:](./images/smilies/icon_redface.gif)
Oh well, not too much oil over the engine and all cleaned up now. Just glad I sorted it before I hit the duel carriage way and gave it the full Richmod

Lol, i did it a couple of years ago...the lid just slipped off the engine bay, and hot oil was sprayed all over the underside of the bonnet lid!!
Have installed a clip on ALL lids since then...
Still, can't complain, my mate wiped his dipstick (no rude replies please
![Laughing :rofl:](./images/smilies/roflol.gif)
), and left the rag on the engine! Halfway to work...well, lets just say he had to call 999!!!

lol.....I was lucky with my cap. I had put it on the water bottle for the screen wash as it was still there when I opened the bonnet! I would have been well p***ed off if it had fallen off....(slowly driving the route back looking for the damn cap!!
![Angry :angry:](./images/smilies/angry.gif)
)
At least I had removed the rag I used to check the level

I did the exact same thing in my T5 a few weeks ago, hot turbo made things worse, but got pulled up to a car wash, let her cool, hosed it off and I was on my way.
Now everytime I double check, sometimes re-opening the bonnet, its always screwed on....

This only happens once to anyone, cause it stays with you.
For all those who can do without the experience;
thats why car-mechanics always place the oil cap on the
bonnet lock / hole.
In case you forget it, the bonnet won't shut !
For now no more 480's : maybe some day ....?

I have to admit it happened twice to me. In both cases I drove about 5 miles before noticing the smell. First time the cap was still there, the second time I had to buy a new one.

I do get the feeling I wont do it again...time will tell though. At least it was better than filling up with new oil without putting your sump plug back in....I haven't done that, but know someone who has
