Viagra Tailgate Struts!

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Viagra Tailgate Struts!

Post by Dan the 480 Man » Tue Jun 12, 2007 1:18 pm

Westlife...

I popped to the scrappers today and found a 480 with it's tailgate up in the air. I went to push it down-it was a bit solid but i thought it was because it had been like that for a while.

So i took them off. Got home, cleaned them (naturally), and whacked them on. When i eventually managed to close the tailgate, i popped the boot release switch and this is what happened (check out the commentry...what a twat...):

Excited Tailgate!

When my Dad had new ones on, even they didn't do that. I can barely close it with one hand! Is that dangerous? Last thing i want to do is shatter the tailgate when i'm trying to close it! Just thought it shouldn't open like that straight away should it??

Coool.

I'd like mine to do that. Always thought thats what they should do. Should they do that normally with good dampers or are those ones for another car perhaps?

yeah that looks pretty cool! and not fast enough going up to do any damage by the looks of things. i bought some new ones recently expecting this to happen, it didn't, but at least it stays open now. like someone said, possibly these were never intended for the 480, other cars with bigger tailgates might have more weight to shift...

Looks like 440/460 ones maybe? I know someone tried them and couldn't close the boot easily.

NICE!! :D

I'm sure Murf and I talked about this a couple of years back, he suggested the 440 ones might do that.

Just be careful when you shut it.

Is that you on the commentary? :)

Not sure about from Volvo, but you can get them here for £8.81 each which seems pretty cheap to me.

The ones they sell are quite stong - certainly enough for the tailgate to lift on it's one once you get it initally moving. Not as strong as the ones in the vid, but that may not be a bad thing.

What a barrage of replies! I feel like such a twat with the commentary, i sound roight loakle! Roo had suggested they may be off a 480. I do quite like them though. If it's too much i might put one old one on to balance it out .

I haven't rubbed the car for 4 days now, so perhaps it's only taking a little to get her excited...some back door action  She's been treated good and proper this week, so she's just offering some sort of return favour i guess
