Warning about scammer visiting forums

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

Warning about scammer visiting forums

Post by snailslime » Wed Feb 14, 2007 1:11 pm

Hello all :)
Saw something on the MR2 forum that is very concerning so I though i'd give you chaps a warning. Seems someone is visiting various forums & offering sort after parts at very cheap prices but NOT sending the goods & instead just pocketing the money

Here is a thread from an escort club:
http://www.escortevolution.co.uk/forums ... opic=74748

They only twigged something was up after loads of members had parted with their money (page 4 of the thread) & thats only one owners club, here's another with almost the same advert and descriptions:
http://www.mk1oc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5219

Seems he has been visiting quite a few. So if you have a newly joined member selling a large list of parts cheap be very vigilant.

Cheers,
Oli

I've just read thought the whole of that thread. From the first page the seller looks quite genuine, being quick with replying etc but the penny soon drops.

In all honest after dealing with Nirex (weather it was a scam or not) I won’t buy from a new member on here. There are a few things other can do if they want to buy off someone who has just registered on here, for example always ask for an address and phone number before parting with cash, you can even ask them to list the item on ebay as a buy it now, would be the safest option in my opinion.

Other than that if anything like that happens here as a moderator I have the ability to trace IP addresses on individual posts so if you wanted to make a complaint to their ISP you could contact them.

I read everything on that, and seems if you use your credit card to fund paypal transactions, you can go straight to you credit card company to get your money back, then they chase it, i didnt know that.

Also, it all smelt fishy fom the start, erm, no i cant post pictures.....who sells stuff on tinternet without pictures! escort morett twin headlights 'mint' £60 delivered, wheels with 'mint'tyres £80 delivered, delivery on wheels is bout 40 notes me thinks.

Im no escort expert, but every thing he listed seemed waay too cheap, even series 1 RS turbo parts, even i know they are rare, just seemed too good to be true for a ford nut, and it was his first post i think.

In the end he took the ford guys alone for touchin £1100

The phrase, 'a fool and his money are soon parted' springs to mind, i mean most of us (including me) have lost money over the interweb, but this guy was throwin WELL sort after RARE parts at people for pennies

Its not as simple as that, I have been keeping tabs on an account in work where someone bought parts of a car forum (completely unrelated to anything in this thread) and got burned by the seller. The claim has to be fully examined first, there is a time limit on how long after the sale you can claim and a minimum amount, so if I paid Nirex with a credit card I wouldn't have been able to claim it back as it was below the minimum amount. In this instance the case wasn't sucessful for the buyer.

Just out of interest, whats the minimum limit for a claim like that?

I almost bought something from Nirex. It sounds like it is a good thing I didn't.
