If u did replace your 480,what would it be??

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

I spotted that one aswell Rich, always had a softspot for the little X19, the MR2 might be quicker etc, but it was based on the X19 so it should have been an improved design I figure.

Someones spent a lot of time on the interior in this one, not everyones taste maybe, but that's some tidy work!

Spooky! I saw that one too, Ad. Not a patch on the TT 480 tho. Seriously!
But answer me this. Why has the MR2 with the cream ineterior got a model of an X1/9 between the seats? Still daydreaming perhaps
Brasco wrote:Hold on, quick pic of X19's interior .... It's BRAAAAAAN!!!
It needs to be, man. It needs to be! :D

But seriously, I don't object to the mk1 MR2 its just that the X1/9 has soul and character. For me it's like Volvo 480 versus Honda Aerodeck. The Aerodeck may be more reliable etc etc but who with a soul and a beating heart of flesh actually wants one? ;) :D
Tonee: '93 Two Tone. High mileage but nice 'n' tidy.

Seriously though, I've got nothing against the MR2, but for me it comes down to character, and having had a drive in both the MR2 and the X1/9 I have to say that the X1/9 is the one that wins for me, if I was in the market for summat else at the mo and a good MR2 came up at the right price I probably wouldn't say no - unless a good X1/9 came along as well, then the MR2 wouldn't have a look in

Cant believe your comparing the X1/9 to the MR2 and coming out in favour of the Fiat!!
I'm on my 3rd Mk1 MR2 now. My 1st one was lowered and handled like it was on rails. The 2nd was a totally standard two tone and it was lovely.

My current one has a 2 litre turbo engine transplant and 250BHP, and it feels like it should have had that engine from the factory. An X1/9 with that sort of power would last 5 minutes before self destructing!!
Another popular transplant is the 3 litre quad cam 24v V6 engine from the camry.

Anyway, lets leave build quality aside because the fiat has no chance, Toyotas are bullet proof!
Heres my top 10 of why i prefer the MR2:
1) yes the fiat was built first but the japs came along (as usual) took and idea and improved it.
2) yes its faster
3)yes it handles better
4)the T-Bar is a great compromise between a convertible and a hard top and the amount of light you get through them is fantastic.
5)The car looks more in proportion, why has the fiat got such a hug bonnet if its rear engined?
6) Theres a factory produced full production supercharged version!
7) it was voted car of the decade by several top magazines (i think! if not it was deffo in the top 3! i'll have to check on that)
8) Rev happy 1600 sings like a bird, all the way to 8.5k!
9)It looks more modern and in my opinion has aged better
10)define character? my MR2's have each had bags of it and ive never driven a car that has been more fun :)

It's great to have a diversity of opinions. :D
I don't doubt the validity of your points in favour of the MR2 or that your expeience of living with the car is far greater than my experience of the X1/9 but...

So, i guess you know nothing about toyota's close links with Lotus in the late 70's early 80's (they even owned a stake in the company, i seem to remember!) and also how much they were involved in the development of the MR2 ;)
A delegation of Lotus engineers went to japan to learn about mass production techniques and teach the japs how to make sweet handling cars, meanwhile a delagation of Toyota engineers were over here at Lotus HQ learning stuff and probably raiding the filing cabinets for ideas

Rohan, the white beast got dropped off in Durham yesterday along with its new engine and other goodies! Should be back in 3 weeks but i dont think i'll use it till spring when its dry. Ive got a chargecooler to fit and a few other plans!
With the T-Bar roof it should make a good greenhouse over the winter

Yeah ,I read about that but I chose to conveniently ignore it  ;)

No, I don't actually want to knock the MR2 - I can only tell it how it strikes me personally - but the above pictures sum it up for me. Then again, never having been in an MR2, I should declare myself open to pursuasion. So if any London-based owners want to show me the error of my X1/9 ways, fell free...

Ahhh, Mr Murf, I was wondering when you'd join this errrrr... discussion ;)

I have to agree that your white MR2 does look amazing, but it's personal taste really, I just prefer the X1/9 that's all, but that said I'm not a huge fan of jap cars personally, I like the MR2's (Mk1 & 2 - can't stand the new ones), quite like that celica you've got but have to admit I prefer the version with the popups, the Honda CRX and the late 80's Preludes & Integras (the ones with the popups), and save the best 'till last - The Mitsi Starion (narrowbody), there are a few others I quite like but I can't be bothered to list em

I just prefer the european cars - dunno why, just do, for some unknown reason I still think the Triumph Dolomite is one of the best looking cars ever built (wouldn't have another though), I still miss my Allegro estate, if it had been repairable after the drivers side front wheel decided to come off I might even still have it now (still got the twin strombergs though ;) ), but at the end of it all, I've always had a soft spot for Fiats (fix it again tom/found in a tip, thought I'd get that in first  ), again, dunno why, maybe I'm just a bit  , but hey, each to their own...

Character - I take it the same as I do with people, either you get on with them - or you don't, some make you happy but some just annoy, cars are much the same way, put me in a Vauxhall Nova and I'm in a bad mood before the key is turned, the MR2 put a smile on my face - but not as well as the X1/9 did

And to add - Sarah would side with the MR2 on this, and she'll probably not talk to me for the next week cos I slated Nova's again, opinions - don't you just love em

It would have to be an alfa 75 twin spark with a supercharger kit I used to have one and they are really well made (shock horror) almost impossible to wheelspin and begging to be tuned

I can't believe you lot ;) , a volvo is for life :wife: :volvo: no other makes compare!!!!!

And in answer to the original question for me it would have to be either a original C70 convertible or a new C30, again, completely blowing the budget stated, but who cares lol, they are the best!!!!!!!

It would be Legacy RS sedan. I know it's cheap impreza but you can have one in the price of well kept late 480 turbo. And that what the question was about.
