Rear Side Indicators

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

I have no side indicators at the back. At my car the reflector is provided with a light in it, burning when my lights are switched on (btw, that's always... it's a Volvo!).

Regards, Bart.

<a href="http://www.angelfire.com/ne2/volvo480/i ...

side indication lamps

Post by volvofox » Tue Jan 21, 2003 12:00 pm

Hello.

The orange lights at the side are like a v40/s40 lights to indicate this is the side of the car (don't know the english word)

The 480 is designed for the US marked, but never got there thats why the pop-up's and the side lights. They are not turnindicators , but must be connected to first mode of light switch current.

I have the front and rear side lights burning. In the rear its easy, just get current at the rear lights, and put in a standard bulb, meant to be in place there. (the lamphole is provided)

In the front the hole for the bulb is lost in the armature's evolution, although there is space for it. So I drilled a hole in "the lamp box" and mounted a small halogen light in it, which i sealed with high quality kit.

I didn't have problems with the mandatory anual "APK" check-up, and it looks very cool in the dark. You can still easyly see the difference between the indicator light and the side light around the corner, next to it, as because the bulb I mounted has low of power. I connected it on the white lamp next to the indicator.

My car looks as its meant to be this way.

succes, volvofox

It must also be possible to install side-markers at the front of the car, an empty space is located on the inside of the direction-indicator-unit in the front. (if you look at the side of this unit you will see a horizontal space on the side of the unit...)
Cya,

Daniël Wilten
Volvo 480 ES Dark Green Metallic, 1996
Volvo 480 ES Graphite Grey Metallic, 1987

I'm guessing non UK cars in certain countries have them so they are connected to the day running lights just like the S40's.

What i've done for the UK car as there is no wiring loom is to make them an extra set of side Repeaters just like the ones on your front wing.

Now here's what ya do. You can either order the bits from Volvo or do it the scrapyard way like i did and save yourself at least £15 on volvo prices.

Get down the scrapyard and find a 340/360 that is from 87 D Reg onwards. You want the ones with the last and latest style rear lights that were on them. Now Open the boot and get to the bulb holders. Now pull out on each side the bulb holder that lights up the numberplate light. It will have 2 wires coming from it. Chop the wires off as far away from the bulb holder as possible and remove bulb holders.

You now have in your possession two bulb holders with a good length of wire on each. Pay the scrap man if he wants anything for em.
These bulb holders slide straight into the hole in the rear side indicator and dont need to be glued or secured in its a perfect fit.

Now go to the 480 open the little flap behind the rear repeater, remove the trim panel that covers the back of the rear lights and unplug your rear bulb light cluster and remove rear bulb cluster from the car. Now Grab your soldering iron and solder one of the wires from your scrapyard find to the metal contact that feeds the power for the rear indicator bulb and then solder the other wire to the earth contact strip.

Now take your rear bulb light cluster and refit to car and push your rear side indicator bulb holders in and test. Repeat for the other side.

And hey you've now got 4 indicators for each side of the car. Pretty cool looking!! <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... lasses.gif ALT="8)">

I also have rear-side-markers and they burn constantly, in my personal opinion this looks 'cool'... <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... smokin.gif ALT=":smokin"> But indeed, you can connect them with the indicators too <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /happy.gif ALT=":D">
Cya,

Daniël Wilten
Volvo 480 ES Dark Green Metallic, 1996
Volvo 480 ES Graphite Grey Metallic, 1987

stationary side light indicator

Post by volvofox » Mon Jan 27, 2003 12:51 am

I don't know anymore howmuch watt they were. I went to the universal car parts shop and bought the lowest watt that fit rear, to stay out of trouble with the APK (yearly mandatory car test)

In the front (i am a machinery mechanic) I used 12 volt halogen indicator lamps of a procescomputer in agriculture, which i drilled into "the box" in the front indicatorlamp unit. (from the top down, inside) Of course u can buy cheap lampunits in the universal car parts shops, well known all over europe, such as halfords or so.

My car looks like it was designed (for the US)again in the dark, and it is also safe. <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">

Remember to use low watt, not to blind anyone(especially the apk man or the police) <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /tired.gif ALT="|I">
