Cruise Control

Here you can talk about the joy owning a Volvo 480 brings. Non-technical discussions take place here, like what is the difference between an ES and a S version.

I bought one for my 480 ES (1721 cc) from
Conrad Anderson in Birmingham.
Phone number 0121 247 0619.
Cost in 2001 was about £175.00, but this depends on the options you choose.
Mine is vacuum operated, with a control stalk mounted just below the direction indicator lever on the steering column shroud.
Wiring is simple.
Study(!) the instructions carefully and don't cut anything until you're absolutely sure!
You'll learn to love laying on your back with your head stuck up behind the dashboard!
Don't connect the actuating cable directly to the throttle pulley, as this can cause the accelerator cable to jump out of its groove when the cruise control opens the throttle - mine is clamped to the accelerator cable between the pulley and the outer cable bracket.
Be careful where you fit the vacuum unit as the electronics can be affected by the ignition coil unit.
Sensitivty can be adjusted, mine works perfectly, but the one I fitted to my wifes V850 'surges' and sometimes drops out of engagement when you least expect it! (I've heard that decreasing the magnets on the drive shaft can help cure this, but I haven't tried it yet).
Best of luck, it's definitely worth the effort.

They charged me 450 euros, but It was a deal I've had made when I bought the car. Normaly, I think it is about 500 to 550 euro.<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... s/eyes.gif ALT=":rolleyes">
It takes some hours... that's the price!<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... /frown.gif ALT=":(">
Grtz, Bastiaan (Volvo 480 2.0i Collection #372/480)

Home of Volvo 480 Europe

Cruise control from 440/460

Post by davidbackman » Tue Jan 14, 2003 3:36 pm

Bottom line would be: If you don't know that it's working in the car it's in now, don' bother trying.

I got hold of a used Volvo original CC from a scrapyard and also managed to track down an assembly instruction and a spare parts list. According to the info I have it "should" work but it doesn't. All help I could get from Volvo was to check the switches by the clutch and brake pedal...I have no way of checking if it's the electronics unit, the wiring or the vacuum pump that's bad. The spare parts list contained several items neither I nor the Volvo mechanics could identify, but some info indicated that the CC's only work with some Speedos. (There's a speedo circuit board listed as spare part for the CC)

Assembly isn't too bad. I had to modify the mounting bracket for the pedal switches some and to build my own mounting bracket for the throttle vacuum servo. They're different between the 1,8 and the 2 l engine. I also had to add two wires to the dashboard, one to get the CC-lamp to light up properly and one to tap into the speedo signal. As with everything dealing with the pedals or the steering wheel you're better off if you remove the seat before starting assembly.

Hey, You're in Sweden, aren't you? If you don't want the CC I might be interested. Let me know please...

cc-lamp? Do you have a light on your dash saying 'cc engaged' then?<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/im ... ns/eek.gif ALT=":eek">
Cya,

Daniël Wilten
Volvo 480 ES Dark Green Metallic, 1996
Volvo 480 ES Graphite Grey Metallic, 1987

CC-Lamp

Post by VOLVO480S » Wed Jan 15, 2003 5:54 pm

On some (early?) models, a dashboard was mounted with a light that says: "cruise" when engaged of course.
I believe it was positioned next to the indicator for 'low' window-washing-fluid (I can't recall the exact name)

So I hope I answered your question, otherwise take a look at the pictures of the brochure in the memberssection (page 4 or 5 has a dash)

Grtz Robert

As far as I know, installing the genuine Vovlo aftermarket CC is not possible in older modells. Don't ask me of what modellyears but not on my old '89 Turbo.
In the older modells only a system 'built-in-from-factory' or some multibrand system would work.
Grtz, Bastiaan (Volvo 480 2.0i Collection #372/480)

Home of Volvo 480 Europe

As far as I know the Volvo original after-market CC is identical to the Volvo factory mounted CC.

I think that the "not possible" part of your statement could do with some more research. The assembly manual isn't particularly clear on what the limitations are. The most tricky things I had to do to install an original CC in an -89 ES was to extract the speedo pulse from the dash by adding a wire to the otherwise empty position on the connector (pin 14, green connector I think). I also had to add a wire to the grey connector to get the CC-lamp to work. That bit shold be fairly easy to do even on cars with an generic after-market speedo, all you have to do is to find a wire that carries +12 V when the CC is engaged and connect it to the dash. Even the old speedo does deliver a pulse train that varies with car speed. (I haven't got any battery operated oscilloscope so I can't tell you what it looks like, and I haven't been able to track down what the CC needs anyhow.). All of the other hardware is already in there, the brackets for the vac-pump and the pedal switches etc...

Note: I'm not 100% sure of the pin numbers, let me know before you try anything and I'll try to check them out for you.

At the Volvo dealer they told me it wasn't possible in my '89...

But for the electrical schemes and installing instructions, take a look at the membersection of the clubsite: www.v ...
Here you can find a download.

Grtz, Bastiaan (Volvo 480 2.0i Collection #372/480)

Home of Volvo 480 Europe

I will look at that as soon as I get the membership sorted. (I'm not one of those who knows the VIN by heart...) But I'm really curious about that "impossible"-bit. It makes me wonder why. What has changed in the car that makes it impossible to stick a CC in an -89? Engine electronics doesn't care about it. Mechanic adaption went quite easy. It has to be a difference in the speedo/instrument panel then. Anybody who knows what has changed in that one after-89?
