removing heatermatrix
Not very hard.
About 2-3 hours work in total for replacing the matrix.

See the Haynesmanual.
You have to
1- empty the coolingsystem (if you are clever only
partly)
2- disconnect the heaterhoses under the bonnet
3- remove the complete console by the handbrake to
the dashboard.
4- remove the side carpets under the dashboard.
5- remove the two plastic-hoses between the heater
and the floor
6- remove the screws (4 or 6) on the left- and rightside
of the heatercase
7- now you can retract the heatermatrix (be carefull
with the tubes form the heatermatrix by some types
you have to disconnect these
8- placing the new matrix might be a bit fiddeling

rest vice versa
Good luck and warm feet.
I did it in two hours.
But I had some training by dismanteling the heatermatrix I needed from a car in a scrapyard.
Gerrsvolvo

re: heater matrix...
the heatermatrix is a small radiator that is integrated in the coolingsystem.
In the 480 (and all 400 types (as far as I know) the heating system has no heatervalve that controles the waterflow trough the heatermatrix.
The temperature foor the inside of the car is regulated by mixing cold and hotair.
Because of this the heatersystem-air does not smell as bad as with systems that use the watervalve system.
The drawback is that especially in the summer in the 480 you cannot use the heatersytem as extra coolingcapacity for the engine if needed.
save kilometers
Gerrsvolvo
