Haynes sucks!
I don't understand you guys who are so eager to recommend Haynes to other owners. Sure, it can save you some guesswork here and there, but compared to the other manuals I've got Haynes absolutely suck regarding the 480. I had a go at replacing the clutch this weekend and Haynes was often completely wrong, or just didn't say anything. It told me to: lubricate the pressure plate, turn the flywheel to the right and do not use clutch wire damper unless it's a turbo. These are wrong or just doesn't make sense. It didn't tell (or show) where all the bolts sticking box and engine together were and all the schematics of the gearbox have the part where the starter engine is mounted cut out. This would have been nice to know. My advice is that before undertaking any serious maintenance work, go to a friendly dealer and ask to have a look in Volvos maintenance documentation. They can often be persuaded to give you some copies of the more interesting bits.

Re: Haynes sucks!
I doubt many dealers will simply let you see the service documentation of the 480. Sure, some might, they are the friendlier 480-deales (blessed when you have one!). The Haynes is indeed not 100% correct on all matters, but I simply wouldn't know a better book to recommend. Here in the Netherlands we have 'de vraagbaak', somewhat similar to the Haynes. I find that owning both helped a great deal. Where one is too brief the other one will jump by!
Cya,

Daniël Wilten
Volvo 480 ES Dark Green Metallic, 1996
Volvo 480 ES Graphite Grey Metallic, 1987

Re: Haynes sucks!
Haynes is rubbish.
Its more of a security blanket. It is woefully inaccurate (fills in gaps with what seem to be guesses) only apears to know where half of any given set of bolts or wires are or do and the photographs are ABSOLUTELY TERRRIBLE. (and that's when they're not peering up the chuff of some ghastly 440.

Hurumph,
Dan

Re: Haynes sucks!
Observe that there are two versions of the Haynes manual. The first version has a red 440 on the outside. This book sucks bigtime!! The other version has a white 460 on the outside and includes all modelyears icl. turbo versions. I've got the latest one, revided 2001.

Real power and Turbo-shit

<img src="http://w1.150.telia.com/~u15008837/sign ...

Re: Haynes sucks!
That second one is the one I have too... On a lot of things it is not 100% clear, leaving important steps out. But it is a great help in determining how to proceed in a certain repair.
Cya,

Daniël Wilten
Volvo 480 ES Dark Green Metallic, 1996
Volvo 480 ES Graphite Grey Metallic, 1987

Re: Haynes sucks!
Surely any help is a good thing. I'm managing to get along with the Haynes manual and a bit of common sense!
Reading all the club correspondence answers a lot of the basic problems. Until someone can hack into the VOLVO mainframe and download the factory manuals we'll have to rely on each others experience!

Re: Haynes sucks!
I really don't feel like I'm asking for the impossible here. It had good coverage on the electrical windows for instance. But a maintenance manual that tells you to put lubrication on the flywheel ? Or the fact that all illustrations of the gearbox have the bit where the starter engine attaches removed? (That's where the last "magic" bolt is hiding that you need to find if you want to split engine and gearbox without breaking anything expensive..) No amount of common sense will be able to tell you in detail about how that part of the assembly looks like. Oh, I forgot. They've gotten clockwise and counterclockwise mixed up in the part about cambelt tightening. And there's something missing in the chapter about rear brake disc replacement. (not all types of hubs represented)

Re: Haynes sucks!
Has anyone seen the computer display of parts and how they fit together from a volvo parts outlet??
Extremely detailed and clear exploded diagrams of every aspect of the car. (Black line on white background with zoom etc) Now that's what l call proper...any hackers?

Haynes Sucks!
Totally agree!!! I have many of the Haynes Book of Lies for loadsa different cars and the only good ones are for the Mk3 Ford Escort, the Porsche 924, and the Ducati aircooled V Twins. ALL the others I have needed are useful as a dog with no arsehole.
But I quote:"...if you are technically interested and require more detailed information than is given in this booklet, we would refer you to our Service Manuals which can be purchased from your Volvo dealer. The manuals contain precise information about repairs and adjustments as well as design and function of the components in your car. They are the manuals that are used by Volvo workshops." Volvo 480 Owner's Manual, circa 1990.
