Power Cable Installation

Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

Power Cable Installation

Post by MGB_GT » Mon Nov 07, 2005 1:52 pm

Is there a convenient hole to put a power cable through from the passenger compartment into the engine bay on the 480?

Took the whole thing apart inside but couldn't see one. Otherwise where is the best place to put one (or safest).

I've finally sorted the sub into in the 480 a few weeks ago. I bought one of the X-Plod ones with a 6cm sub & built in Amp for £60. I used to have it in the S40, but found without a sub output on your head unit you couldn't get much volume from it. However I am much happier with the results in the 480 as I have a sub out on the Sony head unit. It's loud enough to make my ears hurt and with a decent set of components in the car it balances well. Bargain if you want cheap bass but aren't looking to destroy small buildings as you pass.

There are a few options available - a few are discussed and bandied around on this forum in other ICE posts.

I ran my power cable through a hole by the battery into the LH wing skin.
Removing the plastic wheel-arch protector allows you to poke this through until you reach the passenger door

Pop a hole in the rubber grommit protecting the passenger door wiring harness and feed the cable into the passenger foot well (by removing the plastic trim around the bonnet release lever and rolling the carpet back a bit you have power into your car.

I needed the power to run near to the glove box which is why this happened.

Another option is through the triangular relay box that will drop through into the drivers footwell behind the dash - but a lot of high-power switching occurs here which is bound to put noise on the sound system is a draw back.

I think finally a lot of people have followed the large wiring loom running from behind the glove-box (lots of conectors from the CEM bundled up here) It has a large grommit running through the bulkhead. It needs cutting I think - and I didn't want to risk shearing any of the wires it runs from so I avoided this.

Hope this waffling helps you out
