Replacement Stereo

Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

Replacement Stereo

Post by beefqueen » Mon Jun 20, 2005 9:12 pm

I'm dotting all over the place tonight...

Same story - picking up my first 480 on Thursday. I've been told the cassette doesn't work and the radio's giving up the ghost: it's the standard it stereo, so hardly surprising.

I want to replace it with some cheap CD/radio which will simply play my CDs and allow me to take it out when I come to scrap the car (I'm not expecting it to hold out past Christmas).

Are they easy to fit? Will I need any adapter, or do any drilling? Any recommendations on what to get for around £50/£60?

Oh, and it's an '88 F.

Cheers.

As far as i know its just a matter off pulling it out and putting the new one back in.
No a hard job, unless your connections are messedup by the previous owner like it was in my case and it needed to be solderd together.

Older 480's didn't have a standard ISO connector. I believe you can get an adapter from somewhere like Halfords though. - Either that, or cut off the old connector and wire in a universal ISO one.

Same here.
If you got s.thing like this

with two pin connectors for each speaker (one pin flat other is round like in old HiFi speakers) - I guess you will need Ford Fiesta(dont ask me why) to ISO adapter. They apparentely available from Halfords and I am after one myself. If you manage to find one on the net please let me know.

If your Volvo connectors look like this:

then I think you need a PC2-16-4 type adaptor.

Admittedly it is for a 1990 Ford Fiesta, but seems to work fine.
You might need to drill a couple of holes in order to push the tabs on the cage into.
