Need help removing factory (vc708) stereo

Hi ppl,
Could some kind soul give me some tips on how to remove original vc708 Volvo tape/radio from 1990 model?
I removed small plastic thingies from both sides of the stereo hoping to find holding screws or something but they are nowhere to be seen and I am reluctant to use force to wedge/pull unit from the dashboard.

I know the CR906 and CT906 radios have these vertical plastic parts on the front at the left and right side. When pushing these inwards and letting them go they will come out. With a bit of fiddling (gently pushing/pulling these arms and the radio) I managed to remove the unit. Absolutely no idea if this is the same way on yours.

I tried to push w/ my fingers those two square like things just above and below unit case separator but they wont give at all. Don’t know, may be I need to use a screwdriver or something solid to push them but as I said I reluctant to do anything drastic. It should be some easy way.
Any other ideas from looking at the picture?

Poke a couple of rivets/nails into the two holes on each side. push them towards the outside, then pull the stereo out.

Hi Tony,

No, I'm afraid we both have a different radio-restraint-system... I believe some U-shaped tool needs to be insterted there on both sides simultaneously and then you should be able to pull the radio out. 99% sure

Two screwdrivers from 'computer kit' did the trick, did one side then another and voila I am faced with the question what kind of adapter I need for my new AIWA ISO connector \LOL\

What connector is behind it? Volvo has used 2 connectors (at least). Some claim there were 480 sold with the ISO adapter installed from factory, but I don't buy that (yet)... There was a white square connector with 3 rows of 3 pins, and a wide black connector with 2 rows of 7 or 8 pins. For both it is possible to buy an adapter. For the square model you could make one yourself, on the forum the pin-layout is described somewhere...

Hmm, what i got is definitely not ISO connectors, I got 4 plugs all together (plus separate aerial lead) - one is power plug(for 4 pins), second is 4 pin (front?) speakers connector and the third and fourth are two separate 2 pin plugs. All speaker connectors have 2 pins - one round and one flat like on old hi-fi systems.

Sorry for blurry pix but as they say it's better to see s.thing once then hear about it hundred times.

Actually Scruffer(I PMed him a question about his connectors) very kindly sent me picture of his rig with connectors which looks very similar to mine

but when I connected the adapter

which works in his case - I got nothing

Everything fits, everything is straightforward and... nothing
There is a connection manual which came w/ new headunit (AIWA, rebadged Sony) but I didn't bothered to read it, yet.
I'll give it a try tomorrow again and if nothing happens I'll pop in to that carsaudiosecurity shop (they actually on Tottenham Court Road) and ask them for advice.
If anyone got any ideas please let me know.

Look at the configuration of the power supply wires. You might nedd to vut a couple of wires and swap them over.

Yeah its looks that way, I just spotted the difference duh! – car’s power plug has only 4 sockets but adapter which I’ve got has 5 pins and five wires going straight to 5 pins on the ISO end of the adapter but AIWA’s ISO connector on diagram has only 4 pins.
I swaped couple of wires around and I'll give it a try later today.
If everything works out I'll post some pictures and short DIY 'manual'.

Hi guys,
I happy to say that it’s a good news after all.
At the end I had to swap two adapter wires (yellow – continuous power supply /CPS/ and orange – redundant one at the ISO end but going to the second pin where CPS was supposed to go (instead it goes to the 5th pin which doesn’t connect to anything on the car’s plug)
Then I had to swap CPS and switched power supply (red wire) cables in the ISO harness which came with the AIWA and voila, job done.
Two major differences/news though compare to factory vc708 and as usual one is good another one is bad(kinda)
Good one: arial extends now only when ‘radio’ mode is selected so you can enjoy your MP3s while in a carwash if second one can be sorted
Bad news: stereo works now only when the ignition is ‘on’ – switching ignition off turns off stereo.
There is s.thing in the stereo manual about ‘car without ACC position’ (ignition it is) where that red ‘switched power supply’ wire should be connected to the yellow CPS one with special Y type of connector in the stereo’s harness.

Finally I tried to reconnect my stereo last weekend and I can now report that it still wont work when ignition is turned off oh well perhaps next time when I'll have more timeon my hands
