New in car PC

Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

I have the M1-ATX its also available at itx-warehouse here is the link:

http://www.itx-warehouse.co.uk/Product. ... ductID=347

i got all the information from the german forum www.car-pc.info, www.mp3car.com is also good and is in english :)
i`m not the first one with a pc in his 480, so i`m sure if you have any questions just post it here and you will get all the info :)

if you want to place the touchscreen in the same position as mine, afaik only the xenarc 700 will fit because of the lowest height of 121mm. its possible to fit a 8" one but you wil have to put the buttons and other stuff of the lcd elsewhere

I actually built an MP3 player when things like iPODs were far too expensive. Used a PIC processor, DSP and IDE hard drive. Never used it in the end as MP3 players prices dropped so quickly.

My laptop idea is coming along great, very quiet, now runs from 12v. Bought it for £90 on ebay, with DVD drive, CDRW, Geforce32MB graphics card, Firewire, wireless network, P3@1GHZ. Really small too.

Head unit is modded Aiwa to have a line in socket mounted on the back to keep all cables tidy.

Screen will be a Lilliput 7 or 8 inch.

Controls, I don't know, was thinking speach recognition, can't think of any other way of controlling it.

Speech recognition would be very sweet, but still very unreliable these days - maybe a few years time we can have a true "K.I.T.T" :)
"Hello, Michael"
Touch-sensitive screen (as in the Lilliput) is one way in
Another I'm thinking of is to have a trackball mouse mounted somewhere - say the door armrest. Build up a wee bit of software to just grab left and right movements + a mouse click with a bit of sound feed-back to give a "jog-dial" interface for the main progs. Simple, effective and you can keep your eyes on the road!

Does anyone here know the dimensions of the DIN mountings in the dash?
I'm hoping the new nano-ITX boards will slip into the space the radio and volt-meter doodad go :)

eh, it was a 7" widescreen that i was using!

it did cover up and was invisible to thieving scumbags thanks to the cover that i made!

i used a trackball mouse to control mine and had a special mini keyboard designed to be used in bank etc kiosks or i had a numeric keypad with hotkeys set to control winamp.

heres the cover

Hello,

i`m using 7" screen also, here some pics:

Image

and here the monitor withe the headunit:
Image

speech control would be cool, but i don`t think that it would be a reliable control system for a car pc.
i`m using touchscreen (it`very cool!) and a trackball mouse, still to do is an ir-port, so i can operate the car-pc with an remote control.

btw: my first idea to built a car-pc came from a thread on this forum - thank you guys! :)

Thanks for posting some more pics!

Ill be going for touchscreen anyway, dont know where to put the screen tho, as the screen in the top of the dash simply looks amazing but i love the turbo gauge that needs replacing then :(

Speech recognition should be possible anyway, as long as you can combine hotkeys to certain words.
And just make a button in the arm rest or something that you push and activates the mic, but only if the software would support that

Looking for a screen now, read a lot of about the lilliput is that any good ?

i tried the place where murf put his screen and i couldn`t see much on the screen because of the touch-foil. it`s like a "half-mirror"
it´s also not good to control the touchscren down there while driving i think.

screens:
there are xenarc, sp7 and lilliputs in 7" touchscreen.
i don`t like the lilli because of the button design:
Image

i have the xenarc, don`t know about the other screens but i can only recommend the xenarc: best quality, no problems with the touch foil (have read about it on the forum)
xenarc has also some extra features like automatic power on and it switches automatically to a cam as soon its powered on (rear view cam for example).

the 480 badge is made from a piece of el-foil, perspex and black tinting foil. i printed a 480 badge on overhead transparency put it all together so only the "480" shines through, connected the wires - ready! :)

hope my english is not so bad and understandable :)

The Xenarc does seem great judging from its specs, isnt the cheapest around tho.

Is this the screen you are talking about : http://www.cartft.com/catalog/il/44

I'd be able to live with the lilliput design tho, and just hack the power-on option.

So, how did you mould the plastic surround then?

i.e. from the top right hand corner of the heater controls, i can see no evidence of a gap in the plastic where the boost guages were previously, or any sign of the edge of the screen, it looks very professional! :)

yes, but mine had a grey housing. i got it for only 220€ on ebay :)
thats right the design isnt that important, you can also put the buttons elsewhere or replace them with another buttons or even remove the buttons and control the screen only via ir.
So, how did you mould the plastic surround then?
there is no gap :) the screen and the plastic thing is one unit now.
its not that professional how it should be :) i must repaint the grey area around the screen because the surface and the color on the right side is a bit uneven.

but for now im just fed up with any works on the car, after problems with the ecu (thanks to richard for help fixing it :)), replacing the heater controls with the vem and the car-pc, i´m just happy that everything works and i just enjoy driving
