MiniDisc anyone?
Thinking of getting shut of my CD player and going MD.
Is it a wise move?

Like Chris says minidisc never really took off, but if you make up your own compilations there gr8 in the car, no skipping or jumping.
Mrs laserowl inherited my Sony Minidisc for her Paris Blue & it sounded fine on our trip up tio scotland.
I went for a Kenwood MP3 CD head unit with Aux input for my car PC.
Also I must add the compactness of minidisc is very handy.

pita if you want to copy mp3 to mini disc
pita full stop. shame because all that gear cost me lots of money new.
I got the Kenwoord blah blah mp3 player and so far I not made track 144 play on the same trip.

Not forgetting use of the LP function (assuming you have compatible equipment) and you can fit around 5 hours of music on one disk. Not to mention MD's are far more practial on the move, easier to store, less easy to break blah blah. Did I mention both my cars are running on MD?
If they had never made Minidiscs, I wouldn't have ever upgraded from Tapes.
Plus, record all your CD's onto blank discs, if the worst happens (car knicked) you don't loose all your CD's, just some disks you can replace. And you don't wear out your CD's either!

I've done the exact same thing with CD-r's, for the exact same reasons, especially since i have some stuff that would be hard to replace, limited editions of already rare stuff etc. added bonus if i want to listen to something at home i don't need to traipse out to the car.

Wouldn't bother with minidisc myself. Better off getting an IPod and one of the new Alpine units, just plug it in and away you go.

Sony software = Useless. There are a few good ways round it though. Fool your computer into thinking you are copying a CD. (Use Nero's Drive Image function). Put all the MP3's you want to copy on this drive, computer thinks it's a CD not MP3's. Then use the US software for Sony MD (availible online somewhere) which just copies from CD to MD. Sounds more complicated than it is really.

Getting music onto the PC from MD is easy, just hook it up to the optical input on the soundcard.
Unfortunatly most MD recorders are a bit lame as well, or at least used to be. Everything is fine if you record the MD via the optical link from a PC, but the built in recording wasn't very special. They also use a lossy compression that's not ideal if you want to process the audio afterwards.
