Hi all
Can you use a pocket PC e.g. IPAQ to measure, distance travelled, average speed etc,
ive searched the web and cant find a program, surely this is a damn good idea not to have been done had allready.
I realise the GPS only talks every 1-2 seconds, but it would make a good trip computer.

I've got TomTom on a IPAQ 4150 in my 480. It doens't tell you your average speed, but it does tell you the speed which you're doing at the time. I don't know how accurate it is, but I imagine when you're going in a straight line it's got to be pretty good, and it's always less than my speedo, in both of my 480's, which I imagine means my speedo is innacurate, but the GPS is correct!
As well as the TomTom software, with the GPS (which comes as part of the TomTom pack) there is a bit of software which simply tells you your speed and the co-ordinates that you're currently at. The GPS receiver itself is fairly universal, and creates a (in my case), simple bluetooth connection to the IPAQ and I imagine it's emulating a serial port, so any other software shouldn't have a problem communicating with it.
I'm sure there are programs out there that will show you your average speed through the GPS receiver, but the TomTom software on it's own won't do it. It'll predict the time you'll reach your destination, depending on current traveling conditions/speed, but that's it. There may even be a plug-in which will tell you your average speed. Anything's possible, as I've got a plug-in to tell me where all the "safety" cameras are, which I find quite useful!

Congratulations
When you have a steady foot you can do speed measurement with GPS. Better is to use cruise control
But there could well exist average speed tools. They should be visible on google. Maybe this is what you want? http://www.gpstuner.com/

I have tomtom 3 and i have seen the gps status util.
I have found a program called GPSDIS, GPS Driver information system. This gives you average speed, distance travelled, altitude gained, top speed, lowest speed, speed below 3mph (trafgic jams)
Exactly what i wanted but its not compatible with my Navman GPS jacket. and if it was you cant have that and tomtom on at the same time,as tom exclusively takes the com port.
