Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

Look for "Lilliput screens" 7" touchscreen, USB/Serial/Remote control.

www.cartft.com offers everything, gave this a tought myself but ive decided to put the money into something else.

Anyway, you could put the screen where JohnTurbo (??) has it.
Altough i would get a 7" and "mould" some stuff around and respray the thing, look for google on Audi and car pc.

http://forums.audiworld.com/a4/msgs/1734601.phtml , picture offline tho :? looked amazing.

Some guy did a amazing job, if you can find the lower bottom of the middle console you can mess about with that to try and get the 7" in fine.
Would still be sweet tho, build in vioce reconision and stuff :hopping:

Ahhh! Nothing like bringing an old post back!!

I'm one step closer to this. I have just bought one of these:
http://www.computerbargains.co.uk/shop/ ... 264&page=1

Saintsong Espresso with C3 900MHz, 256mb, 30gb, DVD Docking and USB Ethernet.

Okay, it doesn't have a battery, but does have a touchpad and mouse buttons built in which is very cool. Got it, installed XP Home on it, plugged it into my router, and surfing the net in no time :D

It does also have a DC PSU with 15V 3.0A Input, which means presumably I could plug this into my cigarette lighter without modification?

eh, no cos the elctrical system when the engine is on produces around 14v and only 12v when the engine is off.
what you could do though is buy a step-up laptop 12v dc car adapter with a tip suitable for the input jack on your machine, set it to 15v and bingo!

this type of step up voltage converter is called a forward or boost converter,do a search on google and it will probably show you how to build one. save a lot of hassle though andjust buy one!! :D

Cheers, I'll take a look.
Does that mean that it could cut out though?

I was considering trying to hook up a battery to it. Apparently it's the same rating as Toshiba batteries, but would need some wiring modification.

Alternatively, I believe it only requires 15W, so I could use a cheap low-power Inverter in the car?

Ah well, it's a fun toy, installed XP Home and WinAmp, and it was sitting in my living room playing music through my AV Receiver, surfing the net on my TV. Sound is actually really good, very impressed.

ho ho, im a gadget geek too!!
if you use a lower than secced input voltage it could well cut out. it might work though and you dont know till you try! if it was 15 W you could well run it off a camcorder or a laptop battery as long as you had that charger to go with it. where does it say 15Watts though? as 3A x 15V= 45 Watts??

my money is still on the laptop car supply,20 quid outta maplin and you are sorted, this will also smooth out any surges or spikes and if you feel adventurous you can cut off the cigar lighter plug and hardwire it!

it mention in the blurb on the website that it comes with a travel adapter, is this a cigar lighter adapter or does it come with a mains adapter.
if it came with an adapter that fits into a cigar lighter then it will work as it will be designed to run off 12V

If you run it at a lower voltage, it might not work at all, but it might. If it does. you may well find "interesting" things happening, like it works OK, until you access a CD-ROM (because the power it's using to spin the HDD AND the CD-ROM is too much)

Where in the blurb does it mention a travel adapter?

I got mine off eBay second-user, so I got the mains adapter, but no other adapters. Would be very cool if they have a specific one. makes things easier!!

I read the 15W off a review site. It does have a docking station with the DVD drive on it, so maybe the other 30W is for that, and when not attached, it only requires 15W. Or else they got it wrong!

If you see of any batteries that may work, would be interested, I'm not electrically that competent, so would prefer to hear "this will work" from somebody that is :D

Thanks

(Still copying my music over the USB ethernet - sloooowww about 2.4Mbit/s x 12gb = a long time)

Most laptop/.gadget make a car adaptor for their products, just tend not to be standard with the package. Alternatiovely, you can get a protected, rated multi voltage car adaptor which is generic which come with a choice of tips and are suitble for most things. This is what I'll be using for my in-car laptop and I got it for about 15 quid from ebay.

Didn't really follow this thread, but saw an interesting thread at work last week..

I know, it's in dutch, but for those really interested I think you can make heads and tails out of it. A bit at least ;)
