in car pc

Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

what size screen is that (for both bakke and murf)
what did it come off?
its a 7" widescreen tft. it was specifically for in car use but was supposed to be mounted in the back of a headrest.

looks good john, what windows are you running?
i just got a bigger HD drive and when i get the chance i'm gonna install xp with a bluetooth connection to my house pc (i park right outside the window!)
with 40 Gb of music and bluetooth i dont think i'll need wifi.

your car looks good too but you might want to erase the number plate in case of evil cloning!

Bluetooth sounds like a good idea. Running 98se atm, gonna be xp soon.

The fonts are much clearer than they appear on the pic, you can read everything on that map.

Boy is the owner of L900 FFF gonna be pissed!

nice number choice, i'll bet some plates made up and go nick some petrol!!

if you have a BT mobile, particularly a sony ericsson then check out this AMAZING program.
ive been trying to get my phone to work with it for ages but because its a 3G CDMA phone it wont work.
doesnt stop me from spreading the wealth though, just WISH it would work with mine!

basically it turns your car pc into a mobile phone (using a mobile, if you see what i mean)

My in car solution will have bluetooth as the PC will also be responsible for routing mobile phone calls to myself and my passenger, do hands free, pipe sound through to the stereo etc

I have been thinking about using this for my keyboard solution though:

http://www.internity.co.uk/vkb.asp

either onto the dash, or maybe make a sliding rail system that allows a
board to be stowed in the glove box space

good idea.
saw somewhere about the old 'on digital' remotes that open up with the qwerty keyboard inside...apparently,as theyre IR, they can be used to hook up to pcs.
could fit it in the door pocket!

Very nice!
The Lilliput screen you used is very popular for in-car use, nice to know it fits in a 480.
Are the buttons necessary, or can you cover them?

Thanks for the comments guys.

The buttons could be covered up as it comes with a IR remote just have to leave a hole were the receiver is, Think thats what Blakke has done.

Must go and sort the wiring out, blown something on wire that controls elec door mirrors and illumination round heated seat switches. Fuses are ok though :eek

for those interested....
have got one of our unix guys building me a LINUX distro...
gonna have a small footprint, and have only functionality for playing music and dvds.(it will support usb, 10base t connections, IR.)
he reckons it will load in under 20 seconds, have a GUI similar to windows, and be able to shutdown cleanly when power goes (ie ignition off) .
I will put it up somewhere when hes done it, for download.....
it should be able to be downloaded, and installed onto any system.
can anyone think of anything else they would have in it whilst hes building it? (ie wifi etc?)
dont want to increase footprint much, or make it a fat betty OS! but anything relevant.

WiFi for sure - easy to download new tunes whilst it's parked outside :)
And... a bit of driving around, you'll probably find some unguarded access points to collect emails & surf the net!

Personally one of the benefits would be to have autoroute or mappoint running, so windows may be the only way unless there is map software for linux? I was wondering about Windows CE, but not sure of how dependant it is on hardware architecture?

Don't know if there's any good navigation software available for linux/*bsd..
Bluetooth would be nice. If you want to use the PC as a carkit for your phone, you need modified drivers when using Windows; dunno if they're available for linux.

Slakware is the way to go... Can be installed with a very small footprint, particularly if you don't have the development stuff installed. I use it for my network at home where it does lots things. Samba, bluetooth, NAT, DHCP, name server, web proxy etc.

If I do a car pc, then I'll use the PDA as the keyboard via bluetooth. I am sure I have seen some software that can do it using the touchscreen to send keycodes via bluetooth.
