cd head unit for those on a budget

Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

cd head unit for those on a budget

Post by robkendall » Tue Jun 08, 2004 9:24 pm

Just bought the missus another cd head unit for the 480, as shes tight and wouldnt pay for one fitting by source.
its mp3,cd-r,cd-rw compatible,and was only 59.99.
The brand is 'horizon', but after talking to a mate was reassured that it uses JVC gubbings inside....bit the bullet, bought one, and its fantastic for the money! bog standard ISO fitting on the back (which now fits as ive wired in a iso socket to my car)
wheres it from????
believe it or not....NETTO!!!
(are they a national plague, or just a northern thing?)

There's a Netto in Stockport. It's Scandanavian for value. Or so the slogan goes.
That's my car up there, see?

but what's the sound quality like - I fancy the idea of a cheap MP3 CD-R compatible unit, but somethings making me not go out and buy one from Netto - maybe I'm a snob ! :P

I've got a Pioneer head unit in one of my 480's (Pioneer DEH-3300R), and even still with the OEM speakers fitted, it sounds much better than the Sony head unit with Pioneer speakers fitted in my other 480. Next time I come to buy another head unit, I know which brand I'll be sticking with! :D

..... just seen the price of the Lee and Jamo's DEH-9400 - ouch!

lol....yeah, im a bit of a snob like that.....dont normally go into the netto.
Sound quality is good, have had nirvana on full tilt, and theres no distortion at all.....the speakers arent original volvo though...have swapped them all out for sony ones, had a big role of spare gold wire, so theyre all hooked up with that.
it works for her...she likes it,and at the price, well i suppose you get what you pay for......but it really isnt that bad.

I've had the pleasure of fitting several of the Tevion units sold by Aldi over crimbo. they looked bloody awful, sounded acceptable, but just WOULD NOT BREAK. Seemed to be made of mainly Alpine components, and were only around £40-60 IIRC.

Unfortunatley, I've had it 5 years and its only managed to cover 800 miles in that time, and is once again broken.
