If its the original stereo then contact your local volvo dealer with your reg number and possibly chassis number and for about £10 they should be able to get the code for you.

If you have no joy or it's not the original then some companies do advertise in the like's of autotrader for unlocking stereos.

Hope this helps. :)

My Volvo dealer got me the codes for both my cars from the VIN. No charge either. Only works of course if it's the original kit.

what model is it? You usally use the tune up/down buttons to roll through the numbers, and another button submits and moves to the next code

Be warned, if you get it wrong, it will start a delay before it lets you try again. Most keycode stereos do this, and the delay is often exponential, so it's easy to lockyourself out for days, weeks, even months if you guess ;)

I have my first one decoded by a local garage after volvo gave me the wrong code, he put a device, like an eeprom attathced to a wire, piggy backed it onto one of the chips and ran some software which "located" the code... was quite impressive :)

those volvo reports are quite funky. it tells you your key codes, original service details and interesting stuff from new. gave me piece of mind when buying my baby

For the record my bro in law lost the code on his 480 so I told him to put it in the freezer. The following morning it did not need the code and we just re set it to not require the code anymore.

Easy peasy

Hi Chris,

interesting, I heard about freezing a radio to 'crack' it, but how do you set it to not ask for a code anymore?

I dont think I have the radio manual but will check. It explains with some radios that you can disable the code. Personally I think they the codes are pointless. It is too easy to remove them or get the radio decoded anyway.

Some Volvo radios can be switched on without their code if you hold down button number 4 while switching on...
