PDA in car

Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

Hi Stephen,

I have used PocketMusic Player a great deal, but I also like the MS Media Player very much. I have bought a Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket LOOX 600 in Feb '03 and use it as a personal agenda, music player when I am biking and I use the integrated bluetooth for a wireless Internet connection at home. This way I can check my mail when I am still laying in bed :D And even surf web-pages and use MSN-messenger :D

For navigation TTN2 is indeed the best programm I know. Shame they haven't found a way to automatically load a new map when you cross from one into another ;)

A week ago I installed a new operating system om my PDA: Windows Mobile 2003, great that the bluetooth network finally worked (couldn't get it running on the old operating system), but I hope Fujitsu-Siemens will bring out a new update since the SD-card-slot is very very slow. Music stutters and movies too, that shouldn't happen and everyone is affected.

I have a Dane-Elec 256 Mb SD Card which I have used for music and DiVX a great deal under the old WM2002 OS. Since using WM2003 there is something wrong with the SD slot, the speed at least. Somehow Fujitsu-Siemens have delivered poor software for the SD-slot.

Pocket Music Player is very nice, it's like having Winamp on your PocketPC :D

Soon to have a permanently installed laptop in the car with 20GB of MP3 able storage, more with the CD drive in  - might buy a GPS PCMCIA card to turn it into full screen full colour satnav :) Anyone recommend any excellent PC sat nav software?

Don't think you can call it excellent, but I believe MS AutoRoute has GPS support so you can see where you are on the maps. But that won't give you someone guiding you with remarks like "take next exit" or whatever.

BTW: can't you disconnect the screen from your laptop so that as soon as you unlock the door a screen will emerge from the dashboard? :D That would be really cool (like the NAV-screen in a V70 ;) )

Well, I also have a permanent laptop in my car, and I like it so much more than the tiny pda's where you can't see shit on. I have a nice 15" flatscreen, pentium III processor who's capable of running my dvd's, divx and mp3's. Next to that I also have a gps module with spoken software (alturion, like on the pda's)!

Out of interest, what GPS card do you use? I have just started looking and there's loads to choose from, both PCMCIA and USB based - so as smeone that already does what I want to, what hardware do you use and recommend?

Uhm, a laptop can also taken out at night... Unless you weld it in or something... ;)
If I had the resources to this I would certainly go for a laptop instead of a pda... :)

Well by permanent, I meant it'll always be in the car when I am - won't be leaving it in there at night or when shopping ;) - the sliding rails will be a permanent thing and then the laptop will sit on that :)

Bit long and rambly, but it IS Sunday morning and I haven't woken up yet... dragon

Well, I bought a USB GPS mouse from someone on EBay (thanks to Matbat who spotted it), was only £40 or so, used twice - I expected it to be a cheap build that doesn't work with anything, but it came, I plugged it into my work laptop and I installed the driver (Win 2k pro) so it was assigned a virtual COM port - plugged it in, and ran the VERY basic test prog, after 10 mins or so (I was in a very bad room for GPS, but it was raining outside) it said it couls see some satellites.

I downloaded some free map software just as a test, and when I plugged it in, after about 10 seconds it had a lock on, but thought I was somewhere in the Ocean off the west coast of Africa! This didn't leave me very confident, but I left it whilst I made dinner and when I came back it had recentered to pretty much where I live, and the text said something likr 25 miles southwest of Leeds, which is about right.

By this time I had ordered a piece of software called InfoMap Navigator, which costs only £35, but from the blurb on the website seemed to be a very capable piece of software - I spotted other Navigation and Mapping progs for between £100 and £300, so again, I was a touch skeptical about this program, but I bought it anyway, hoping it would be sufficient for in car use at a basic level at least.

10 days went by and nothing came, I had been emailling the compaby and no reply. I was getting a bit (well, a LOT) , but yesterday it finally came. I installed it, did some quick configuration and tested it, and it knew exactly where I was, I typed in the postcode of the house I was in at the time, and it centered the UK Map in about the right place, so I decided to zoom in to see what level of detail the information went to - zoomed 3 times, and I could see the name of the small vilage I was in, which impressed me, but I wanted more, so I zoomed in 3 more times, and it basically had it's pointer centered pretty much outside the house I was sat in, the road was drawn correctly and it even had the name of the road I was on at the time - it even had a little "fake" bit of road that was off the corner next to the house I was in (like when they build a bit of road expecting someone to build some more houses that way in the future) - I was well impressed that it had such detail in a £35 piece of software!

I tried the navigation function on my way home. It took me a while to suss out how to actually use the software to set start and end points and how to actually tell it to start going, but I was halfway home when I sussed it (NO, I was NOT doing the driving), and suddenly this woman's voice started telling us where to go, and what was ahead etc - whats more, the GPS seemed immensely accurate, down to a metre or two - what a bargain!

So for the price of £75, and a laptop (free to me), I have a very capable (at least locally, but no reason to think it wont be as good everywhere) in car Sat Nav system with voice navigation :D :D :D

I was going to go see Daz480GT today, and give it a proper test, but call-out for work last night was nasty and I didnt sleep till late, so I can't really go today :( - hohum, hope you got my text, Daz - let me know...

Anyway, I'll use this system again on a longer journey to the horses today and see if I'm still as impressed :P
Cheers!

Hello...

I'm planning to buy a HP Ipaq 1940 and I might by Tomtom navigator 2..
BUT I'm going to use the HP Ipaq 1940 to store and listen to MP3's, so my question is if it would be possible to "connect" the HP Ipaq 1940 to my car stereo..?

btw: the stereo is a JVC KD-S70R

I hope that someone have a answer to my question...

PS. sorry for my bad english

Hi Daniel,

there are several ways to get the sound from your pocketpc to you car stereo:

1) Use a headphone-to-cassette adapter. They are not very expensive and easy to use.

2) Use a 'soundfeeder' or something similar. This product is connected to the PDA and will transmit a signal on the FM-band that your car stereo can receive. Might not be legal in some countries, but who cares ;)

3) Maybe it's possible to connect the audio of the PDA to an amplifier somehow. Just a guess.

Hope this helped you :D Good luck! TomTom2 is very very cool :D

Thank you...now I know what I'm going to buy this summer :D

Offtopic: I've tried to connect a amplifier to my ordinary computer...and the sound became worse than with the original computer speakers..but with my Sony Net-MD it worked great... :?
