Removeable sub/amp switch

Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

Removeable sub/amp switch

Post by esta » Sun Oct 26, 2008 2:20 pm

Well heres the story....when I added the amp and sub to the car it kept eating my battery, even when the radio was off it would sit there consuming the power from the battery.

So I decided to add a switch! For ages now, the switch was just a button attached to 3 wires, hanging in the glove compartment, awaiting the final resting place.

The other week I chose the box I wanted and put the switch into the box, and then, with no real ideas coming to me of where to put it (it had to be visable to prevent me from forgetting to switch it off-hence the lighted switch as opposed to a plain switch).

Eventually the idea came to me (OK, I admit, it was a suggestion from the other half  ) Hows about a removeable switch, that way I wouldnt have to worry about a place to affix the switch, and therefore no unsightly cuttings of the interior trim, no boxes stuck to random bits of trim and still somewhere that I can see clearly from the drivers sea (So NOT the glove box!!)

And this is how it has ended up!!

What do you all think? In my opinion, its very tidy, hasn't damaged any trim, its removeable to deter thieves, its clearly visable to prevent battery drainage and its not having to be affixed to any trim permanently!! :hopping:

@ Cerby - you should be so proud of me! So far I have only blown 2 x 10amp fuses, 1 x 15amp fuse and completely knackered 1 jack socket!!! ;)

Good idea , and visible .
So that just cuts the power to the Amp ?
Does your head unit not have a 12v remote wire to the Amp ?
I wish I had the time to do things on my cars like you seem to have.

Yeah it just cuts all power.

My HU DOES have a special input for a sub, but I have had the wiring ready since I had the standard HU in it. And I am not sure about whether the standard unit had it, but no matter how I wired it, it still greedily gobbled at the battery!!

Lol, trust me, it's been a job on a long waiting list of ideas I have. Tho I think money seems to be more of a prob than time!!

I've been sitting on the fence for a few days thinking abut this (i know, so petty!), but i do actually like it. I guess it'd be handy if somebody broke into the car, and thought about getting the amp out, they'd think twice if it didn't work.

Also, it's gadgety, and i like gadgets! Nice job :D

I'd honestly be more interested in finding out the cause of the power drain and fixing it, but this works well as a workaround.

Lol @ Dan the 480 Man!! It is a bit gadgety isnt it?! I think thats why I had to do it that way, instead of making a bog standard button!! Glad it appeals tho ;) O and quick edit: Where I live, its nice to know that there is nothing there to tempt the thieves!!

@GLTease...I have been trying for ages to find the source of the drain, but its like every 480 problem, if you dont get it by the 10th attempt you give up  Plus I needed a quick work around as my boyfriends car is currently being terribly unreliable, and I needed a car I knew would start first time at 6 in the morning, every morning whether rain, shine, storm or snow!! Good old 480!! ;)
