HUD possible????

Here you can post things about ICE (In Car Entertainment). Like how to install GPS navigation, a DVD-player and other yuppie-stuff. This category might be moved to "those other things" in the end...

HUD possible????

Post by jamooga » Thu Jun 26, 2008 2:02 am

Been thinking about the nxt ice project in my car. I've got my sound system setup the way i want it now. two jbl's in front and in the back created a false floor with two ovals and a 8" sub connected to an amp.

Love to install a carpc. Been following loads of threads on this and got the basic idea down so far.

What i really would like to do though is in stead of the normal lcd build in a heads up display of some sorts. Basic idea would be to have a projector aimed at the front window. I know the new corvettes have a similar system to display their night vision.

Is there a small projector on the market that will be able to project an screen on the windscreen being that the distance is so small if installed into the dash?

Just a bit of brainstorming here.

Seems possible in different ways. There are some really small beamers on the market that would do just fine. They are however way too expensive. Another possibility would be to change the backlight of a normal lcd and have that projected on the windshield. Will have to do more research on that.

Did find a nice bleutooth device for around 60 euro that will display the speed and directions from a nav on the windshield though.

If you change the back light of an LCD to project onto the window you will end up with the images being the wrong way round (mirrored) wont you?

That is correct. There seem to be two ways of solving this though. The easiest is to have a piece of software flip (mirror image) the image. Another way is to have it reflecte via a set of mirrors before it hits the screen.

Biggest problem im facing now (remember just theorising at the mo) is getting the light intensity needed.

I considered doing the same for friend's car.

I have a Alphacool LCD wired via USB.
The display is controled using a software called LCDhype. This soft allows easily to invert the display output in order to make readable when mirrored in the windshield.

The purpose is to display info from ODBII and GPS nav interactively on the windshield. The communication between GPS software and ODBII software is done via a third party soft TCPsender (available from LCDhype site).
This is buggy and I think the best way is to develop a LCDhype plugin specific for NAV and ODB data handeling. I must admit this is too much for me as of now ...
I never consider installing that kind of setup in a 480 due to the lack of ODBII support.

The iPhone has an HUD application download for £0.59 works really well in the 480 as the angle of the dash and window projects a very good image ... It gives speed direction and height ?! ...
